Description

This I Believe speech Description: Present a four-minute speech on what you believe following the patterns of belief essays from the “This I believe” abstracts. Purpose: Demonstrate your ability to effectively deliver a speech. Instructions: This is your first official speech in our class. You may have noticed that each activity we have done has been designed to prepare you for this speech. I have included several points for you to consider in preparing for and delivering your “This I Believe” speech.

 

Tell a story: Be specific. Take your belief and ground it in the events of your life. Consider moments when belief was formed or tested or changed. Think of your own experience, work, and family, and tell of the things you know that no one else does. Your story need not be heart-warming or gut wrenching—it can even be funny—but it should be real. Make sure your story ties to the essence of your daily life philosophy and the shaping of your beliefs. Be brief: Your statement should be between 500 and 600 words. That's about four minutes when read aloud at your natural pace. Name your belief: If you can't name it in a sentence or two, your essay might not be about belief. Also, rather than writing a list, consider focusing on one core belief, because four minutes is a very short time. Be positive: Please avoid preaching or editorializing. Tell us what you do believe, not what you don't believe. Avoid speaking in the editorial "we." Make your essay about you; speak in the first person. Be personal: Write in words and phrases that are comfortable for you to speak. I recommend you read your essay aloud to yourself several times, and each time edit it and simplify it until you find the words, tone, and story that truly echo your belief and the way you speak.

The speech is four-minutes. Preparation and practice prepare you for a four-minute speech. Giving a three-minute or five-minute speech tells me a couple things. First, you didn’t prepare your material to match the time requirement and secondly, you didn’t repeatedly practice your material. There is some variation in how long you will present in front of the class due to nervously speaking slower or faster than practiced. In a fourminute speech this only accounts for a few seconds at most.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE:

I Believe in Football “I believe in football. As the ultimate team sport. I believe in all different levels of football. High school football, college football, professional football, pick-up football, and flag football. I believe in the spread offense, wing t, the option, the wildcat and the west coast offense. In the Over, Under, and Okie defenses. I believe in both lineman skill players and kickers. In head coaches and assistants coaches. I believe in giving everything you have to win a football game whether it is on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday. I believe in lifting, running and watching film year around to prepare for the season whether you’re playing for yourself, a school or an organization. I believe in a large group of players and coaches working together to achieve a common goal. The goal could be as small as fixing a bad habit to winning a championship. I believe that football teaches people leadership teamwork and trust. I believe that football forms lifelong friendships between teammates and coaches. Coaches can be someone you admire at times and despise at other times. I believe in the history of football. The first football game played between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869. In Walter Camp, who laid the groundwork and modified football into the game that it is today. I believe in leather helmets with no facemasks and high-tech revolution helmets worn only by the best players in the world. I believe in the development and advancement of football. From a college sport rarely played because it was thought to be too violent, to a Midwestern industrial town sport, to a sport that has become America’s game. I believe in the Green Bay Packers, as the original Super Bowl champs. In the Lambeau leap, created by LeRoy Butler. I believe in old school football and new school football. I believe football unites schools, towns, and the nation. Super Bowl Sunday has become a national holiday. I believe there is no bond stronger than the bond between two teammates. I believe in first downs and touchdowns. I believe in field goals and extra points. I believe in playing football on turf, grass, dirt and even concrete. I believe in game winning drives, overtime thrillers and 40-point blowouts. I believe in underdogs and favorites, in rivalries and upsets. I believe in long bus rides to away games and walking down the street to home games. I believe in All Americans, All Pros, and practice team

players. I believe in dreams, from just making the team, to becoming a starter, to making to the next level. Football can give a kid with no direction in life hope for a better future. I believe that no matter how much work and time is put into the preparation, it is always worth it in the end. I believe in blood, sweat, and tears.”...
