Study Guide: To Kill a mockingbird Part 2 The three themes ● Prejudice ● Growing up ● Courage

Prejudice ● Lula is being prejudice towards the Finches (chap 12) ● Everyone is prejudice to Mr.Raymond bc he drinks ● Girls are more sensitive according to Scout (chap 25)

Growing Up ● Jem is growing up & very hormonal (chap 12) ● Jem says he’s like a caterpillar in a cocoon and he’s growing up to be a butterfly. ● “In the secret courts of men’s heart Atticus had no

case” said Scout (chap 35)

Courage ● Cal taking the kids to church (chap 12) ● Cal standing up to Lula (also one voice against others) (chap 12) ● Zeebo standing up to lula (also one voice against others) ● Boo saved the kids bc he was compelled to do it

Irony ● Lula is mixed, but she was being racist towards Scout and Jem being in church (chap 12) ● The african americans give Scout and Jem weekday gestures, but they should be gesturing them ● Even in a place of justice, justice is not fair to the ppl of Maycomb. (the blacks have to sit in the balcony) (chap 16) ● Boo asked Scout to walk him home in a whisper like a child in the dark but Scout is the child and he lives

in the dark.

Juxtaposition ● A mocking bird and Tom. They both get hurt knowingly by someone with an advantage ● The overhead lights came on in the courthouse and the lights came on Heck stomped on the floorboards the ppl can see what they’ve been ignoring

Motif ● Scout loves Calpurnia she called the way she spoke “nigger talk” (chap 12) ● Jem is color blind; he does not see the problem ● One voice can make a difference (Sam Levy) (chap 15) ● Blind Eye- Mr. Cunningham was a good man but he

had Maycomb’s usual disease. (chap15) ● Walter Cunningham stood in Atticus’ shoes for a minute (chap 15) ● Tom is a mocking bird and he was knowingly hurt by someone with an advantage (Mayella) (chap 20) ● Atticus told Jem to put himself in Bob’s shoes (Chap 23) ● When Jem says he’s like a caterpillar in a cocoon. Blind, but is warm, cozy, and safe. You grow up and turn into a butterfly, but you have to watch out bc you can see everything. The world is a big butterfly net. You're not safe inside a cocoon anymore. (chap 22) ● Blind Eye- Jem is blind to the fact that he’s using the same social hierarchy. He’s blind to his own habit (Chap 23) ● Blind Eye- Atticus is blind to Boo killing Bob bc he thinks Jem would have a motive (chap 30) ● When the lights turn on when Mr. Tate stomps on the floorboards, they can see everything

● Blind Eye- If you really look at a person you see who they really are, “Most ppl are, Scout, when you finally see them.” ● Jem will see everything when he wakes up in the morning

Allusion ● Tom is going to be turn up alive and everyone is watching like the roman carnival Ms.Maudie mentioned (chap 16) ● Miss Maudie said “We’re so rarely called on to be christians, but when we are, we’ve got men like Atticus to go for us”. Everybody in the town steps back and they wait for ppl like Atticus to step up (chap 22) ● Gray Ghost is an allusion to the whole book

Symbolism ● Atticus aims (gun) to defend him- one of the Idlers (chap 16)

● When Atticus reached up took of his glasses, turned his good right eye to the witness, and rained questions on her (chap 18) ● The overhead lights turned on bc Maycomb forced to see what they chose to ignore for 3 generations (chap 19) ● The brick wall symbolises maycomb's usual disease (chap 22) ● Maxwell’s last name is Green and green means unexperienced like him (chap 22) ● Scout wanted to crush the roly poley just like how Helen felt crushed like an ant when she found out Tom was shot (chap 25)...
