Description

Tractor Supply Solicit feedback from the class on final project topic ideas here. Include the industry, the firm and the general threat or opportunity that you wish to address with your strategy plan that you will be developing in SBA. Read each posting and critically think about the feasibility of such a study to be supported extensively with data and information. The environmental scan is a part of the strategic business plan you develop for the company of your choice (capstone project). So you do it for the company of your choice, as you need to identify issues about the company and the external environment it is in, that is a relevant industry sector (from global perspective and with consideration of ethical decision making). The company needs to be your focus to use all tools, as in the individual case analysis, and to recommend the strategy for it, and strategy implementation (functional strategies) and evaluation and control process. The strategy recommendation depends on the strategic problems observed and identified through the tools used in the Environmental Scan analysis. So please remember that the topic is your company, and the issues addressed in the recommended strategy are the strategic problems to face in your project. I spent ten years working as a store manager for Tractor Supply Company, and in those ten years saw them responding to pressures of increasing online shopping and competition from retailers not associated with farm products. Despite outside forces on their business, Tractor Supply has an advantage due to many of the products they sell. Many items such as fencing, farm equipment and livestock feed were simply not carried by online retailers because of their bulk. Tractor Supply was able to respond to their customers’ wishes to be able to purchase online and pick up in store. The shift in their business from hometown feed and grain store to a retailer with 1800 locations and an online presence was inevitable. I’d like to look at their shift in marketing approaches, changes in executive leadership and strategy, and their approach to speeding up delivery of orders to customers that have become accustomed to deliveries from Amazon. Develop an external analysis and look at the market place here and determine if you have enough data, research, and competitive information to build the strategic plan. It seems like a win for the Tractor company. When a business implements a solution for business- easily consumers are engaged because they feel as if their voices were heard. Tractor Supply relies heavily on the culture that they have curated over many years. This is a major key to their success. Many shoppers go to Tractor Supply stores to consult with employees on repairs, big projects, and how to care for their animals. Amazon and online competitors can’t convincingly offer the same services, says Scot Ciccarelli, analyst at RBC Capital Markets (Meyersohn, 2019). Despite this niche market, customers have long had issues with Tractor Supply’s supply chain. Distribution centers were too far from stores, emergency products took too long to reach people in need and the amount of payroll given to each store to handle the freight was not sufficient. I’d like to focus on their supply chain issues and the issues these have caused within the stores and getting the product in front of the customer. Reference Meyersohn, N. (January 24, 2019).
