ASIGNMENT-01 TUNNELS OF PAKISTAN 1. KHOJAK TUNNEL The Khojak Tunnel (aka Sheilla Bagh Tunnel) is a 3.91 kilometres long railway tunnel located in Killa Abdullah district of Balochistan. The Khojak Tunnel is on the Chaman Extension Railway, which opened in September 1891 to link Quetta with Chaman on the Afghan frontier. Chaman would have been the starting point for the construction of a British railway to Kandahar, had the military situation required it. It remains one of the longest tunnels in South Asia, and the longest in Pakistan.

2. Kohat Tunnel The Kohat Tunnel is a 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) long road tunnel located in KhyberPakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Construction on the tunnel began in 1999, and opened to traffic in June 2003.

3. Lowari Tunnel Lowari Tunnel also known as Lowari Sarang whose work was began in September 2005, and was completed in 20 July 2017. It is a road tunnel which is 10.4 km (6.5 mi) vehicular tunnel under the Lowari Pass of the Hindu Kush mountains, between Dir and Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The total cost of the tunnel was ₨26.954 billion (US$170 million). The tunnel is one of the longest tunnels in South Asia, and is the longest in Pakistan, superseding the 3.91 km (2.43 mi) Khojak Tunnel in 2018.

4. Malakand Tunnel The construction of the Malakand tunnel would not only shorten the distance for travelers belonging to Dir, Malakand, Swat, and adjacent areas but also provide Pakistani goods easy access to Central Asian states. The 9.7km project includes three bridges and approach roads on both sides of the tunnel.

5. Nahakki Tunnel Ghalanai-Mamad Ghat Road (45 Km) is located within Mohmand Agency FATA which is bounded by Bajaur Agency to the north, Khyber Agency to the south, Malakand and Charsadda districts to the east and Peshawar district to the south east. Ghalanai is administrative seat of the agency; while Mamad Ghat is an important locality within the agency connected to Noristan province of Afghanistan through Nawa Pass; a locality on Pak- Afghan Border. The Total Project Cost was Rs 2569 Mn.

6. Sawat Motorway Tunnel Prime Minister Imran Khan unveiled the plaque to mark the inauguration of tunnels on Swat Motorway and also inspected these three newly completed tunnels constructed by Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The 80-km-long Swat Expressway has seven interchanges and three tunnels with lengths of 1,266, 271, and 324 meters respectively. From its own side, FWO has also constructed a 140 metres long Rockfall Shelter on one of the carriageways for safety of commuters.

It has Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for controlling various features of these tunnels including air ventilation/ quality, fire fighting system, CCTV monitoring, lighting, communications and alarm systems.

7. Hazara Tunnel Km Battal Tunnel completed at Hazara Motorway Battal Tunnel is 2960 meters (3 KM) long which will convert 1.5 hour distance to 5 minute. This tunnal starts from Battal and covers all distance of Chattar Plain top and reaches towards Kakti arae. This tunnel simply bypass all distance of Chattar Plain Mountains Top.
