Description

CE/CZ3001: Advanced Computer Architecture Tutorial-2 1) In a quick addition competition of play-schools of the city, each team was given a pack of 1024 cards, and asked to add the numbers written on the cards. Each card has a number written on it. Each team consists of 8 students, and performs the additions in distributed parallel configuration (with fixed set of pre-arranged seats). The final result is computed by the team captain. Assume that each student in Team-1 takes 10 seconds to add any two numbers, and requires 20 seconds to send any number of cards or partial results to any other student of the team. Similarly, each student of Team-2 takes 11 seconds to add any two numbers, and requires 10 seconds to send any number of cards or partial results to any other student in the team. (a) Which of these two teams is the winner? (b) If the number of students would have been 32 then which team would have been the winner? Discuss the effect of team-size and communication time in this example. ( (a) Team 1 is the winner; (b) Team 2 is the winner)

2) Consider a processor working at its maximum operating clock frequency of 300 MHz at operating voltage of 3.0 volts. If the operating voltage of the processor is increased to 3.3 volts, find the % change in the following: (i) Dynamic power consumption (ii) Static power consumption (iii) Performance (iv) Energy consumption for any given program. Assume that the maximum operating clock frequency is proportional to operating voltage. Discuss the impact of increase of voltage in the following two cases. Case-1: When you opt to increase the operating frequency to maximum usable frequency which is achievable after the increase of voltage. Case-2: When you do not change the operating frequency after the increase in voltage Based on the impacts of increase in voltage, analyse the impact of reduction of operating voltage. (Case 1(i) 33.1% (ii)10% (iii) 1.1(iv) 21% , Case 2 (i) 21% (ii)10% (iii) No change (iv) 21%)...
