This factual based documentary has been developed in three vital stages as stated above. The first being pre-production and the development of initial ideas. The brief that was given to us was centred around the question ‘Internet of Things’. Neesey and Alice then analysed the brief further and came up with the ideas below.

As you can see we had the idea of turning this into a piece about the robotics in Leicester in which we found out is the birthplace of said up and coming technology. After having numerous disappointments when setting up interviews we then decided to change our documentary idea and solely focused on the up and coming technologies that use the internet that benefit Leicester as a smarter city. Our brief also stated that we needed to find out what the public knew about the terms ‘Internet of things’ and ‘Smart city’. To combat this, we decided to that we would like to include Vox pops within our documentary. Now that the brainstorming has been completed the next stage in the preproduction process is to create a storyboard, set up interviews and other content and ensuring consent has been given to potential interviewee’s and that a risk assessment is complete so everything runs as smoothly as possible. Below is the storyboard outline.

As you can see we wanted to keep this documentary straight to the point in regards with segments and mainly including informational pieces. However, after careful consideration as a group we decided to add cutaways of the locations we are filming in to add a bit more dramatic flair and creativity. Other pre-production processes include organising meeting with potential interviewee’s. Initially we tried to contact a couple of robotics companies in Leicester but unfortunately this did not work out meaning we had to look

elsewhere for content. We found that verbal consent was appropriate for this work seeing as there was a high level of communication between the director and the interviewee (Tracy Harwood) including confirmation in email correspondence that the interview would be filmed and used in a documentary that could be seen by the public. The email correspondence between the director of the group and interviewee Tracy Harwood can be seen in the appendix. Communication was also a very key factor that must be demonstrated not just in the pre-production processes but throughout the whole project. It was the producers role to maintain communication within the group, control the WhatsApp group and to make sure each member fulfilled their set tasks.

Production This part in the process is where all the planning is put into motion. As stated before communication is key between members of the crew/ production team as well as guests and interviewee’s. Camera Lighting Sound The period when all filming finishes is when all equipment is dismantled and returned in its original condition in this case to AV Loans. Before this all footage and audio collect must be shared onto our group space that is Google Drive. It is also a common curtesy to thank all guests and interviewees for their contribution as well as the production team.

Post-Production During the post production process, the editor gathered all the footage which would be suitable for the documentary. After selecting the most relevant and beneficial footage, the footage was then collated in Adobe Premiere Pro. The editor needed to work with the sound department and match the correct

audio files to the video files and make sure that the audio was in sync with said video. The editor made sure to edit in chronological order, this ensured organisation and a better work flow. The footage was then edited in the desired place and put on a timeline in order to match the storyboard. To aid with the appealing aspects and creative flare of the documentary, clips were edited in terms of changing the brightness settings or sharpness and adding transitions before some clips to help the documentary flow better. After the whole documentary was compiled and put together, the editor rendered and downloaded the video file in correct settings.
