Typology and Conventions Reading List and Location
Week 1 – 2 Course Reading: Projecting Politics in American Films by Haas et. al (Available in d2l course resources as e-book link. See diagram below for how to access.) Note: there are two editions (older and newer) of the Projecting Politics Course textbook. Try to use the newer version. The page numbers may be slightly different but just look for the headings in each chapter and read each section. Note: I don’t use the diagram of High – Low political content and intent as the diagram isn’t always accurate and requires knowledge of a director’s intentions which we may not know. Instead, I refer to messaging as either: Implicit or Explicit. Chapters and topics Core topics: Chapter 1 Setting the Scene -Typologies pp 10-14 (Politically Reflective, Socially Reflective, Pure Political, Auteur) -Unpolitical films (films that are not obviously political) pp. 14- 16 (e.g Socially Reflective and Politically Reflective) -Types of Political messages (subjects/subject matter of political films) pp 17-19 -Impact of Political films pp 19-22 Chapter 2 The Making of a Message
-Political film Conventions pp. 33-35 How to access the Christensen and Haas’ Projecting Politics:
