Abstract

This report will discuss prop guard design constructed for drone. Report will touch on what is the purpose of having the prop guard on drones. Advantages and disadvantages of having prop guard. Author will provide statement about what makes their design unique and quality product. CAD media will be used to illustrate and explanation. Author will explain what makes their design lightweight but strong at the same point. Simple explanation will provided on how to mount the prop guard on the prop arm.

Discussion of the Design Prop Guard and its purpose: Prop guards can see on most beginner level drones. Prop guards provide protection to propellers when they collide with something. Prop guard are fitted perfectly between mount and prop arm to ensure safer flight for your drone. Prop guards are not only for beginner drone but also used on expensive drone to protect the consumer investment (usually optional)

Pros and Cons flying with prop guard: Biggest upside of flying with prop guard is SAFETY. Not just safety of your drone but also safety of people. Drone is likely to cause LESS damage if there is something covering the propeller, since props are the most dangerous thing on drone. Downside of flying with prop guard is addition of extra weight. Extra weight means adding more throttle to maintain altitude (more battery consumption). Another downside of prop guard can be on FPV drones, since guards cover most of the front view, user have to use gimbal to hold the camera underneath the drone.

Design: SolidWorks software was used to generate the CAD model for the prop guard. Provided STEP file was only used to get rough dimension for outer diameter and motor mount dimensions. All wall thickness were set to 3.5mm as instructed (>2mm). ( figure 1 )

Outer diameter is 135mm with wall thickness of 3.50mm which gives the inter diameter of 128mm. outer wall height is set to 35mm.

Air flow and total weight reduction:

To allow thew air flow through guard, few symmetrical cavities were added (figure 2). To ensure smoother finish fillet were also added to the design.

Four more cavities were added for total weight reduction while increasing the air flow (figure 3)

Motor mount placement: Size and placement for screw for motor were taken from STP file provided. Screw hole are 2mm through all. (figure 4)

Discussion: This design is unique in way that it is very simple and effective and same time. I am well aware that there are no cavities around the surrounding which could have reduced the total weight. When drone collisions occur, most common element to break are usually props even when prop guard are attached. Propeller surrounding must be sturdy to ensure the safety of the propeller. One might think prop are cheap but sometime carbon fiber propeller (usually on expensive drones) can cost up to $50 for a pair.

Most of the weight comes from the surrounding wall which actually needs to be there to provide the strength. Putting everything together I believe this design is really effective strong enough to placed on drone,
