GBA 490 – Uber Case Elizabeth Iniguez 1. How would you describe the crisis at Uber? What grade would you assign to Uber’s board of directors based on actions it has taken in the past or is now taking in the aftermath of that crisis that could appease Uber’s stakeholders? Explain. The crisis for Uber is an ongoing crisis that began when staff members, the CEO, and other member were involved in financial fraud and sexual misconduct in the company. With the former CEO Kalanick not performing well and setting the professional standards in the work environment it was very easily for anyone else to perform unethically. I would assign Uber’s board of directors a “D” based on actions it has taken in the past. The board of directors’ responsibility to make decision on hiring and firing personnel, distributing dividends, managing the corporation. The performance of the board of directors during the crisis was poorly done they did not establish any policies or rules to help fix the ongoing issue for Uber. 2. How would you assess Uber’s corporate culture prior to the arrival of CEO Dara Khosrowshahi? The corporate culture prior to the arrival of CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is seen as a unethical and a misconduct culture. To prove the prior culture several staff members performed unethically and did not care for the standards. It has also been proved that the previous CEO Kalanick was involved behaving unethically towards employees, scams, and in sexual harassment. 3. What does incoming CEO Khosrowshahi’s need to prioritize in building and upgrading Uber’s culture? The new CEO Khosrowshahi’s needs to prioritize to improve the corporate culture for Uber. The corporate culture should be providing a safe workplace and ongoing professionalism. Improving the culture will help establish better relationships with shareholders, with the board of governors, and employees and customers. The second issue CEO Khosrowshahi’s needs to prioritize ensuring the work environment is safe and the standards of what is expected in the workplace are set. Uber needs to ensure that everyone is performing at their absolute and treating everyone respectfully. The third issue to build and upgrade Uber’s culture is to earn customers trust by communicating with what is safe and efficient for users. Uber needs to take responsibility of the issues involved with Uber and establish rules and regulation to avoid any other issues. 4. What extent have Khosrowshahi’s efforts to transform Uber’s corporate culture, at least thus far, been the result of centralized vs decentralized decision making? The result of Khosrowshahi’s efforts to transform Uber’s corporate culture decision making is to improve the corporate culture. With the sexual harassment, corporate theft lawsuit, lack of regulation, misbehavior, and discrimination in the environment it was

important for the CEO to make changes. Khosrowshahi’s focuses to improve the guidelines established in the workforce. With guidelines set Uber will be able to expand globally and establish great partners globally. Hiring a new executive team who is well experienced is a step Khosrowshahi is taking. Khosrowshahi is also establishing an open environment for everyone in the workplace. This is in hoped to understand issues, concerns, needs, and limitation that must be addressed by executives. 5. What specific additional actions could Khosrowshahi take that would make an even greater contribution to turning things around at Uber? How might these actions dovetail with the long-term interests of Uber’s stakeholders? An additional action Khosrowshahi could do is to improve the relationships with drivers. Overall, the drivers make up the main part of the company so establishing safety guidelines for both the driver and consumer are important for Uber. With scandals going on about drivers mistreating or harassing consumers or vice versa the safety for both parties needs to be established. The impact of the experience of both parties overall effects the demand and supply of the company therefore establishing rules and regulation must be set....
