STUDENT MONEY ADVICE AND RIGHTS TEAM (SMART) University of East London Progression Bursary 2017/18 – Guidance Notes Please read before you complete the form and keep for your reference. The University of East London Progression Bursary (UPB) is available for students to apply from 1st November 2017 to support employability by targeting low-income, full time undergraduate student groups with financial barriers in the following areas: Job interview expenses (final year) Travel and reasonable adjustment costs for students with disabilities only, attending integral work placements, engaging with study abroad opportunities or co-curricular opportunities (available in 2nd year and final year, depending on placement year)  High course related costs (for final year, full-time students from the College of Arts, Technology and Innovation) The maximum award from the Progression Bursary is £2,000.  

1. Eligibility 1.1 To be eligible you must be enrolled on a full-time undergraduate programme for the academic year 2017/18 and meet 75% attendance at the time of assessing your application. 1.2 Part time undergraduate students and all postgraduate students do not qualify to apply to this fund. 1.3 International, EU and Distance learning students do not qualify for this fund. 1.4 Students enrolled on contract programmes, studying with a Collaborative or Franchise partner are not eligible.

2. Application 2.1 Before submitting an application to the UPB, undergraduate students must show they have applied for and received their first instalment of full means-tested student funding from Student Finance and NHS if applicable. Students who are not income assessed and/or have not requested the full Maintenance Loan available, will not be considered for the UPB. 2.2 Funds are limited and applications will be considered on a first come first served basis, until all funds have been allocated. 2.3 Students must show that tuition fees have been paid in full, or that a payment plan has been set up with regular payments made, before submitting an application. 2.4 Eligibility and attendance will be checked. External organisations may be contacted before an application is considered. 2.5 Applications must be handed in with all supporting evidence attached. Documents must be photocopies, as originals will not be returned and will be destroyed in line with the Data Protection Act. 2.6 Incomplete applications will automatically be deemed unsuccessful. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SUBMIT THE CORRECT DOCUMENTATION The maximum award from the University Progression Bursary, Hardship Bursary and Engagement Bursary combined is £2,000.

3. Outcome 3.1 You will be notified of the outcome through your UEL student email within 30 working days of SMART receiving your application form. If successful, you will be paid 2 weeks from the notification email date. 3.2 There is no right of appeal to the outcome of UPB assessment. If your circumstances change during the academic year, you may request a reassessment by submitting a letter and evidence of the change of your circumstances.

4. Payments 4.1 If awarded; your award will be paid into the bank details provided on your UEL Direct account. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that bank details are provided and are correct. To securely upload bank details on UEL Direct: Step 1: Login to UEL direct, Step 2: Click on My Records, Step 3: Click on My Payments Step 4: Under the Bank details tab, provide your Sort code and Account number. Step 5: Once submitted you will receive an email that you MUST read and click on the ‘Click Confirm’ link 4.2 Should a student qualify for an award above £1,000, this award will be paid in two equal instalments. Prior to the payment of the second instalment your attendance on your course will be confirmed. Any monies overpaid as a result of a ‘break/withdrawal’ from your course will be reclaimed. 4.3 Unpaid Emergency Loans will be deducted from any UPB award. If you are paid your award in two instalments, your unpaid Emergency Loan will be deducted from the first instalment.

5. Evidence - Please refer to the section you are applying under for evidence required: 5.1 – Job Interview Expenses (for final year, full-time UG students only) Students are eligible if they are:  In receipt of full means tested student funding from Student Finance/NHS 2017/18  Currently studying in final year  Selected to attend an interview for a graduate job (paid/voluntary) Students will need to provide photocopies of the following evidence:  Student Finance notification 2017/18 showing full funding  NHS notification 2017/18 showing full funding, if applicable  Interview confirmation letter confirming interview date and location  Travel ticket receipts  Receipts for interview related expenses  Confirmation email/letter stating: ‘I confirm £…… to be the exact expenditure accrued for my interview on (date) at (company name).’

5.2 - Travel and Reasonable Adjustment Costs for students with disabilities only, attending integral work placements, engaging with study abroad opportunities or co-curricular opportunities Students are eligible if they are:  In receipt of maximum income-assessed Student Finance entitlement 2017/18  In receipt of Disabled Student Allowance (DSA)  Currently studying in second/ third year Students are not eligible if they are: 

In receipt of DSA for travel ( i.e. if travel costs are already being met by DSA)

Students will need to provide photocopies of the following evidence:  Student Finance notification 2017/18 showing full funding  NHS notification 2017/18 showing full funding, if applicable  DSA2 notification letter - student will not be eligible if they are currently in receipt of DSA for travel (i.e. if travel costs are already being met by DSA)   

Placement confirmation letter (including duration, timing and location) Confirmation email/letter from your lecturer/programme leader confirming integral placement, study abroad or co-curricular opportunity Evidence of costs for travel and/or reasonable adjustments i.e. receipts for travel or breakdown for proposed costs

5.3 Course Costs - (for final year, full-time students from the College of Arts, Technology and Innovation) Students are eligible if they are:  In receipt of full means tested student funding and NHS if applicable  On an integral project or show as part of the course  Currently studying in final year Students will need to provide photocopies of the following evidence:  Student Finance notification 2017/18 showing full funding  NHS notification 2017/18 showing full funding, if applicable  Evidence of costs for the projects and/or shows i.e. receipts for materials or breakdown of proposed costs  Confirmation email/letter from your lecturer/programme leader stating: ‘I confirm £… to be the exact/approximate costs for (student’s name)’s project/show as required for the integral part of his/her course’

6. Submission Completed application forms and supporting evidence should be returned to:  SMART, University of East London, 4-6 University Way, London, E16 2RD Alternatively, forms can be handed in at The Student Support Hub based at Docklands and Stratford Campuses.
