PSYC1002: Psychology 1002 Semester 2, 2019 | 6 Credit points | Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day | Unit type: Standard Coordinator: Caleb Owens Faculty of Science (SCIE), Psychology Academic Operations Unit description Psychology 1002 is a further general introduction to the main topics and methods of psychology, and it is the basis for advanced work as well as being of use to those not proceeding with the subject. Psychology 1002 covers the following areas: neuroscience; human mental abilities; learning and motivation; visual perception; cognitive processes; abnormal psychology. This unit is also offered in the Intensive January session. For more information consult the web site: https://sydney.edu.au/students/summer-winter-study.html Prohibitions: None Pre-requisites : None Co-requisites : None Assumed knowledge: None Unit aims PSYC1002 aims to provide a broad overview of six topics in introductory psychology. Together with PSYC1001 (which can be completed before or after PSYC1001), these first-year units form the beginning of an APAC accredited pathway to becoming a registered psychologist. You can complete PSYC1001 and PSYC1002 as standalone units, or complete four more units for a Psychological Science Minor, six more units for a Psychological Science Major, or eight more units for a fully accredited Psychology Program. Learning outcomes At the completion of this unit, you should be able to: LO1. demonstrate a broad understanding of the diverse areas of psychology taught: cognitive psychology, neuroscience, perception, mental abilities, abnormal psychology and learning and motivation LO2. demonstrate a significant understanding of what binds such diverse pursuits into the single discipline of ‘psychology’ in regard to language, research methods, attitude and approach, and an appreciation of the ethical issues associated with behavioural research LO3. demonstrate a thorough understanding of the core research design principles and statistical approaches used throughout of psychology, and the ability to apply them in a critical manner LO4. demonstrate a good understanding of the APA style used for the presentation of written material, particularly research reports LO5. demonstrate an appreciation of the complexity of the interaction between the individual and their environment which produces such diverse behavior both generally and in relation to personality, development and prejudice. Graduate qualities The Graduate Qualities are the qualities and skills that all University of Sydney graduates must demonstrate on successful completion of an award course. As a future Sydney graduate, the set of qualities have been designed to equip you for the contemporary world. Please see https://sydney.edu.au/students/graduate-qualities.html Study commitment Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total. Teaching staff and contact details Coordinator

Assessment summary Online tutorial quiz: The eight assessable online tutorial quizzes are not compulsory. If you do not complete all or some of these, or score less than maximum marks, you simply will not receive the marks associated with them. A Special Consideration applied to the online quizzes will result in a reweighting outcome. Not that all quizzes are equally weighted at 0.625% (software would not allow more than two decimal places) Research participation: Research participation is not compulsory. If you do not complete any or all of your five hours of research participation, you simply will not receive the marks associated with it. An alternative to research participation (a written assignment) is also available on request (before the end of Week 5) more details on your Canvas site. Research report: The research report assignment is a compulsory assessment which means a serious attempt must be submitted before the closing date. The Canvas site has a clear description of what constitutes a serious attempt. Final exam: The initial final exam is a compulsory assessment, but so long as you attend no minimum performance is required. A successful application for Special Consideration or Special Arrangements for the final exam will result in you being offered a replacement exam during the replacement exam period. Unlike the initial multiple choice exam, note that the format of the replacement is short answer question. Final exams are never offered earlier. Detailed information for each assessment can be found on Canvas. Prescribed readings All readings for this unit can be accessed on the Library eReserve link available on Canvas. Other resources Other resources can be found on Canvas. Late penalties The Assessment Procedures 2011 provide that any written work submitted after 11:59pm on the due date will be penalised by 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date. If the assessment is submitted more than ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded. However, a unit of study may prohibit late submission or waive late penalties only if expressly stated below. Special consideration A special consideration application can be made for short-term circumstances beyond your control, such as illness, injury or misadventure, which affect your preparation or performance in an assessment. If you are eligible for special consideration, you must submit an online application and supporting documents within three working days of the assessment, unless exceptional circumstances apply. Assessment grading The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1). As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard. Educational integrity While the University is aware that the vast majority of students and staff act ethically and honestly, it is opposed to and will not tolerate academic dishonesty or plagiarism and will treat all allegations of dishonesty seriously. All written assignments submitted in this unit of study will be submitted to the similarity detection software known as Turnitin. Turnitin searches for matches between text in your written assessment task and text sourced from the Internet, published works and assignments previously submitted to Turnitin. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of dishonesty to your teacher, they are required to report your work for further investigation. Further information on academic honesty, academic dishonesty, and the resources available to all students can be found on the academic integrity pages on the current students website: https://sydney.edu.au/students/academic-integrity.html Work, health and safety requirements Other requirements Lecture attendance: 80% expected and recommended to pass unit.
