HailingfromPensacola,Florida,Emmittstartedbyinterviewingfamilymembersandold friendswhodirectedhimtoafamilywebsite.Throughthissite,hewasabletotracehis grandmotherEmmaLeetoaplacecalledBurntCorn,Alabama.Makinghiswaythere,he foundalmostaghosttown,butremarkably,locatedasecondcousinwhogaveEmmitt hisnextclues.

AttheMonroevilleCountyCourthouseinBurntCorn,Emmittdiscoveredthathisfamily wasbornintoslavery.TogetherwithanexpertfromAncestry.comtheyfoundother membersofthefamilytreewithasurnameofPuryear.Emmitttraveledtoanold plantationinAlabamatofindoutmoreaboutthePuryearfamily.Emmittlearnedthrough aletterthatAlexanderPuryearwasaslavetraderwhocamefromVirginia.Whenvisiting thegravesiteofthePuryearfamily,EmmittreadMaryPuryear'swillandfoundthatshe passedonMariahandPrince,amongherotherchildren,toanotherfamilyalongwith othergoodsvaluedatabout$2000.ItturnsoutthatMariahisEmmitt’sfourth-great grandmother.ItisheartbreakingwhenEmmittaskswherethegravesmightbeandheis pointedtowardthewoodswheremanyslaveswereburiedwithoutheadstones.

EmmittheadedtoVirginiatofindmoreinformation.WhenhegottoVirginia,Emmittwas shockedtoseethatthename"Puryear"wasblazonedonbusinessessuchastireand flowershops.AlexanderPuryearwasoneofthefirstsettlersinthetown.Slavetrading occurredatalocaltavernwheremen,women,andchildrenwereauctionedandsold. ThemoreEmmittlearnedaboutslavery,themorepainfulhisjourneybecame.
