Fortwoseasons,NBChasbroadcastadocumentaryseriescalled"WhoDoYouThink YouAre?"TheideabehindthisseriesistotakeafamousAmerican–asportshero, actress,politician–andhelphim/hertrackhis/herancestrybyworkingbackwardin his/herfamilytree.ThisseriesisapartnershipbetweenNBCandAncestry.com,an Internetsitewherepeoplecan,bybecomingamember,accessonlinesearchestodo thesamekindofresearchthatisdoneonthisshow.Duringthefirstseason,famous, formerDallasCowboy,EmmittSmith,trackedhisancestrytoslavesbroughtherefrom Africa. 

2

HailingfromPensacola,Florida,Emmittstartedbyinterviewingfamilymembersandold friendswhodirectedhimtoafamilywebsite.Throughthissite,hewasabletotracehis grandmotherEmmaLeetoaplacecalledBurntCorn,Alabama.Makinghiswaythere,he foundalmostaghosttown,butremarkably,locatedasecondcousinwhogaveEmmitt hisnextclues. 

3

AttheMonroevilleCountyCourthouseinBurntCorn,Emmittdiscoveredthathisfamily wasbornintoslavery.TogetherwithanexpertfromAncestry.comtheyfoundother membersofthefamilytreewithasurnameofPuryear.Emmitttraveledtoanold plantationinAlabamatofindoutmoreaboutthePuryearfamily.Emmittlearnedthrough aletterthatAlexanderPuryearwasaslavetraderwhocamefromVirginia.Whenvisiting thegravesiteofthePuryearfamily,EmmittreadMaryPuryear'swillandfoundthatshe passedonMariahandPrince,amongherotherchildren,toanotherfamilyalongwith othergoodsvaluedatabout$2000.ItturnsoutthatMariahisEmmitt’sfourth-great grandmother.ItisheartbreakingwhenEmmittaskswherethegravesmightbeandheis pointedtowardthewoodswheremanyslaveswereburiedwithoutheadstones. 

4

EmmittheadedtoVirginiatofindmoreinformation.WhenhegottoVirginia,Emmittwas shockedtoseethatthename"Puryear"wasblazonedonbusinessessuchastireand flowershops.AlexanderPuryearwasoneofthefirstsettlersinthetown.Slavetrading occurredatalocaltavernwheremen,women,andchildrenwereauctionedandsold. ThemoreEmmittlearnedaboutslavery,themorepainfulhisjourneybecame. 

5

EmmittbelievedthatMariahPuryear,hisfourthgreatgrandmother,maybethelink betweentheblackandthewhitesideofhisfamilyandthekeytohisroots.Helearned

thatshehadbeensoldasanelevenyearoldgirltogetherwithahorseandbridle. AlthoughEmmittconsideredthetraderwhoboughtheracoldandheartlesshuman,he alsohadtorecognizethatthemanwastobecomehisgreatgreat,great,great,great, grandfather.  6

Finally,Emmittwasinformedbytheexpertsworkingwithhimthatheissevenpercent NativeAmerican,12percentEuropean(whichsuggestsseveralEuropeanancestorsin hisfamilytree)and81percentAfrican.ThismeansEmmitt'snextjourneywillbeto Africa.WhilehewasunabletotracehisfamilydirectlytoafamilyinAfrica,hevisited oneofthemostfamousslavetradingareasofthetime.Heenvisionedhowayounggirl orboywhowasassessedtobestrongenoughwassoldintoslaveryandtransportedto America.Hethoughtlovinglyofhisownfourthgradedaughterwhoisthesameage.
