Murder on the Orient Express INTRODUCTION TO THE MOVIE:

“Murder on the Orient Express” is a movie which revolves around juctice through revenge. Detective Poirot(protagonist) is taking a short holiday to Istanbul. He gets the last seat on the Orient Express, which ends up being the murder scene of a scheming counterfeit art dealer on the very first night. The snowbound train is also the ‘hiding spot’ of the murderer who is one of the remaining twelve passengers. Poirot must solve the crime before someone else gets killed. But the crime, the victim, and the suspects weave a complex web entangling Poirot in a way that leaves his perception of right and wrong shaken to the core.

THE THEME OF REVENGE :

“Revenge is the weak pleasure of the narrow -juvenal But sometimes-narrow mind can start a revenge too.” The movie murder on the orient express is written in whodunit style. The fairly unique in a genre known for its black-and-white and relevant sense of justice which provides the perfect backdrop for revenge which in itself is justice in its most radical yet clear cut sense. A jury is made up of twelve citizens who walk into a courtroom and decide whether a defendant is guilty or innocent. Murder on the Orient Express plays with the same idea. There are twelve people on the train who is the jury and executioner of a criminal. Justice is served in a way that it wasn't guaranteed in the courts being a version of a lawless jury. Justice with revenge in this movie, forces us to think about the ways in which the two are similar and different. Reason to resolve complicated problems – and to see through to the truth of things. Quoting detective Poirot who was played by the magnetic kenneth Branagh “I have seen the fracture of the human soul. So many broken lives, so much pain and anger, giving way to the poison of deep grief, until one crime became

many. I have always wanted to believe that man is rational and similised. My very existence depends upon this hope, upon order and methods and the little grey cells, but now perhaps I am asked to listen instead to my heart. I have understood in this case that the scales of justice cannot always be evenly weighed and I must learn for once to live with the imbalance.” This quote having such a powerful meaning on the movie . Vengeance is at the core of the film , but the way in which the vengeance shines through and is introduced to the viewer is executed brilliantly. Poirot is the person who will catch the killer , the audience knows that , the bigger question arises in the “Why?” Why did someone kill him? . This is where the film changes the viewers perception and explores, not the act of revenge, but the idea and agony behind it. The film cleverly uses flashbacks and Poirot's past experiences as a detective, that add in to main plot of the film . The film explores the emotion of revenge almost to a degree which makes even the viewers question the ability to test out and judge a crime , it makes us question the way Justice works in the world and how it too , can take a wrong decision and not realize the consequences . All the scenes up to the end keep us in a whirlwind of doubts and confusions, With Hercule Poirot being in the center of it all , he is suspecting every single person , but nothing seems to make sense , the puzzle pieces don’t seem to match up . Poirot comes to an appalling realisation that all 12 of the potential suspects have committed the crime . Poirot being in a state of shock, demands a reason, a clear cut explanation as to what would cause 12 individuals to devise a plan to take a life. Edward Ratchett, had killed a child, this henious crime had terrible affect on the lives of those 12 people. Justice was not served, Edward had fled.

CONCLUSION Murder on the orient express is a tale of justified revenge. The storyline exists in the grey and brilliantly exploits this facts. The lines between right and wrong blur poignantly and that leads to the indecision that poirot faces.his decision to let the ‘avengers’ go is not something he agrees with but acquiesced to given the situation.Whether you agree with the actors or not you cant help but empathise with their actions. My empathy though does transcend into agreement, for no

matter how raw and unbridled the revenge was;the act which garnered this radical response was worse....
