Keywords: Spotify, Songs, English Listening Skill A. Introduction The method of English language teaching has been considerably changed due to the entry of technology. Technology offers a lot of benefits as making teaching interesting and more productive in terms of advancements. The use of technology helps learners get involved and learn based on their interests. It has been extensively accepted for teaching English in the modern world. Graddol (1997) said that technology is the center of the globalization process and impacts education and culture. Lam & Lawrence (2002) also expressed that technology helps learners to regulate their own learning process and have access to many information that their teachers cannot provide. Technologies are increasingly widespread, impacting many aspects of our social and work lives, and many of our leisure activities. Many researchers stated that technology can be used as an instructional tool in teaching and learning skills. Furthermore, all of these researchers unanimously agreed that technology helps teachers improve their teaching methods and learners increase their knowledge. When using technology, learners not only control their own learning process, but also have access to further information over which their teachers cannot control. Technology plays a key role in promoting appropriate activities for learners and has a significant impact on teachers’ teaching methods in their classes. Technological advancements 1 | Page

have gone hand-in-hand with the development of English and are changing the way in which we communicate. If we ignore technological developments in our classes we will never be able to keep up with these technologies. Therefore, it is very important for teachers to be aware of the latest equipment and to have a full knowledge of these technologies in different situations. There are different reasons why all learners and teachers should know how to use the new technologies. In this paper, the writer will examine some of the important issues related to the use of Spotify in Teaching listening. These issues are as follows: the meaning of listening, the procedure of teaching listening, the procedure of teaching listening, the nature of Spotify, the implementation of the Spotify to the Listening and some examples. B. Literature Review 1. Skill Understanding a. The Meaning of Listening Listening skill is key to receiving messages effectively. It is a combination of hearing what another person says and psychological involvement with the person who is talking. Listening is a skill of Language. It requires a desire to understand another human being, an attitude of respect and acceptance, and a willingness to open one's mind to try and see things from another's point of view. It requires a high level of concentration and energy. It demands that we set aside our own thoughts and agendas, put ourselves in another's shoes and try to see the world through that person's eyes. Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. According to (Brown, 2000) Listening is not a one-way street, it is not merely the process of a unidirectional receiving of audible symbols. It means, listening is an active process of converting meaning from spoken language. It can be said that listening is more than merely hearing, but there is an active process inside the brain. As (Nunan, 2004) have stated that listening is an active, purposeful process of making sense of what we hear. It means that listening is the very first language skill before people are able to speak, read, and write. b. The Procedure of Teaching Listening The procedure of teaching listening divided into three stages as pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening and each of the three stages has its own specific purpose (Underwood, 1989). In pre-listening activities, teachers help to hear and give some clues about the activity expectations mostly by activating schemata. It can help students to predict what they will hear. Teachers can use realia in activating schemata, 2 | Page

for example a photo, a map, a brochure or any other object related to the listening text make students activate their prior knowledge and help them better understand the listening (Wilson, 2008). While-listening activities are the main activities of the listening tasks. Students listen to the input and make decisions about the strategy to use according to the requirements of the task. According to (Underwood, 1989) the goal of while-listening tasks as being something that helps the learners understand the message of the listening text. An example to while-listening activity is “bingo”. This activity is especially enjoyable for young learners. In this task the teacher writes a list of words on the board, which are included in the listening text. The students individually select and write seven words on a piece of paper. Then, they listen to the passage and put a ticked, they shout “bingo”. It is a good activity for selective listening even if it hinders listening extensively (Wilson, 2008). In the post-listening stage, students work in detail applying both top-down and bottom-up strategies to link up the classroom activities and their real lives (Wilson, 2008).

Post-listening tasks may be directly related to the pre and while-

listening activities or they can just be loosely related to these activities. Furthermore, “checking and summarizing” is one activity type that can be performed as postlistening task. In this activity, first the teacher puts students into small groups to lower individual speaking anxiety. The teacher’s role, here, is to monitor students and to stimulate them by attracting their attention to the related and interesting points. Then, they share their ideas as a class and then students can summarize the important parts. 2. The Nature of Spotify a.
