UTS Western AND Eastern...

Description

Dominique Leigh A. Babis BSED English 1-A Write top five (5) differences between Western and Eastern society, culture, and individuals in the table below. Western Western thoughts at the looks at the world in dualities wherein you are distinct from the other person, the creator is separate from the object he created, in which the self is distinguished and acknowledged. Westerners may seem to have loose associations or even loyalty to their groups. They more likely straightforward and forceful in their communication as well as decision-making,

Westerners also emphasize more on the value of the equality even if they see that the individual can rise above everything else. Western Culture is what we call an individualistic culture since their focus is on the person.

Eastern Eastern perspective sees the other person as part of yourself as well as the thing you may create, a drama in which everyone is interconnected with their specific roles. Eastern or oriental persons look after the welfare of their groups and values cooperation. They would also be more compromising, and they tend to go around the bush in explaining things, hoping that the other person would “feel” what they really want to say. Asians, with their collectivistic culture, put more emphasis on hierarchy as the culture wants to keep things in harmony and order. Asian Culture is called collectivistic culture as the group and social relations that is given more importance than individual needs and wants.

ANALYSIS Do you agree with the differentiation between the West and the East? Where can you find the Philippines in the distinction? What are the factors make the

Philippines similar or different from its Asian neighbors? Is there also a difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines? An honest opinion from me would be yes. I definitely agree with the Western and Eastern differentiations. The nations of the East and West are distinctly very opposite to one another especially in culture-wise and society-wise. Although, even I haven’t visited a Western country, I am quite familiar and have a view of the way they live through movies or tv series that I watch. Also, through streaming videos in YouTube and in books. I could say that West is rational, and East is sentimental. The East’s culture is often based on the continuity of their/our past, that we all are tradition-based. Culture differs from one country to another and from one region to another. No culture can be the same. The Philippines is part of the world's eastern region. I can say from the comparison from above that the Philippines, from our neighboring countries, have similar traits, culture, and traditions. Like, showing respect for elders and ties to one’s family or barangay. In Thailand, they have the wai, in Japan and Korea they bow. In the Philippines, they have mano po. This gesture is given as a sign of respect. It’s even practiced in Indonesia, where it is called salim. This is how neighbors influence each other. We are also conservative and sentimental individuals. We are all very family oriented. When it comes to our personalities, Asian countries share the same personality of being nice people, very tolerant, easy going, and polite most often. We also smile more often than people in the West. If we have similarities, we also have differences to our neighboring countries. While majority of Asian countries have their own alphabets like Korea, China, Vietnam , Japan and more, Philippines on the other hand never had the chance to enrich our own alphabet, the Alibata, instead, we adopted the English alphabets. Culturally, our society is most shaped by Western influences. We were Catholicized by the Spanish, who left their imprint in enough during their colonization to our country. The fact that the Spaniards colonized us for 300 years and next were the Americans which these two are Western nation, we have adapted some of their cultures, traditions and also our language. Yes, there is a difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups. For example, the dialects spoken, famous folklore, well-known local products, festivals, etc. The fact that when if we just move to another city, the dialect is now very different.
