Question 3

What is a pneumothorax?

Source: http://www.atriumu.com/

Occurs when there is an opening on the surface of the lung or in the airways, in the chest wall – or both. The opening allows air to enter the pleural space between the pleurae, creating an actual space.

Question 4

What are the 2 classifications of pneumothorax?

Open – opening in the chest wall (with or without lung puncture) Allows air to enter the pleural space eg penetrating trauma from a stab, gunshot, impalement etc Closed – chest wall is intact but rupture of the lung and visceral pleura (or airway) allows air into the pleural space.

Question 8

What does an airleak in the chamber indicate?

Air leaving the pleural cavity or a leak in the circuit. An airleak will be present in a pneumothorax that continues to have air in the pleural cavity. The air leak level will vary depending on the size of the leak.

What documentation is required for a pt with a chest tube?

Dressing Bubble, swing and drain Amt and type of drainage Suction level

How do you know the suction level to administer and how do you know what level of suction you have set?

Source: http://www.atriumu.com/

The suction level is ordered by the medical team. In a wet circuit you will fill water to the level of suction and then require gentle bubbling when suction is applied. In a dry circuit you will turn the dial to the appropriate level of suction and see the bellows when suction is applied.

What do you do when you accidently break the UWSD and it is disconnected from the chest tube?

Answer

Clamp chest tube, apply sterile drape around end of catheter, clean end of catheter and connect new UWSD, unclamp and notify medical team.
