Violin Family The violin group of instruments was created in Italy in the sixteenth century. At the time the name of this group of instruments was viole da braccio which was utilized to separate them from the viol family (viole da gamba). The standard present day violin family comprises of the violin, viola, cello, and (potentially) double bass. All the Instrument names in this family are derived from the root “viola”. Members of the Violin Family Created in the sixteenth century, these violas da braccio are unmistakable from the violas da gamba family. Current individuals are: 1. Violin 2. Viola 3. Cello 4.
