Step 4 ⮚ Secondary intro Scaffold for Conceptual Framework 1. Eugene Delacroix was a French romanticist painter who was a friend and pupil of arguably the most famous romanticist painter, Theodore Gericault. Under Gericault, Delacroix emulated his subtle political commentary style and developed a unique approach to colour, influenced by artists such as Michelangelo. His ability to show emotion within his works is seen in Liberty Leading the People ( 1830 ), portraying the French revolution against Charles X in 1830, symbolising Liberty as a woman leading the people to freedom. 2. Gericault’s romanticist art style would influence George Gittoes, a Australian social realist artist who’s works emphasize socio-political problems in some of the world’s most problematic regions. His contemporary interpretation of these situations can be seen in his works Death and the boy ( 1994 ) which reflects on the massacres by the Khmer rouge after the Cambodian civil war and The Preacher 11 ( 1995 ), an intense image of a Rwandan preacher moments before the massacre in the Kibeho camp. 3. Much like Gericault and Gittoes, conceptual artist Ai Wei Wai challenged traditional notions of art, that the aesthetic was more important than the concept. Ai Wei Wei used his art as a form of resistance against the oppressive Chinese regime, who restricted social and political opinions of the Chinese people. This is observed in his works Remembering ( 2009 ), an installation that remembers the collapse of 7,000 schoolrooms that left many students dead, protesting against the Chinese government's response to the incident. His Study of perspective series ( 1995 – 2003 ) reflects his disdain for political power and symbols of power, reflecting on places such as Tiananmen Square gate, once the entrance to the forbidden city and also the Tiananmen square massacre in 1989.
