Through the documentary ‘Waste Land’, Lucy Walker gives insights into preconceived ideas of stereotyping, attitude toward garbage and the perception of what is considered art. Mankind is under the influence of norms and no options but obeys the impersonal rules. Often, people often reflect themselves upon the world in an impersonal way. The harsh reality is that people are often treated based on the preconceived ideas shaped by the upper and middle-class upon their occupation and socio-economic status. There is an idiom saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” conveys the attitude toward the unknown, no mere words can describe the vibrant colour. Lucy Walker introduced the society’s point of view with los aerial montages of still frames, portraying the catador “from above”. The diegetic mouse clicking sound reinforces the impersonal perception of an ordinary person “from above … you don’t have any of the human factors”. The approach here reduced the concept of identity to speckles of dust. At the same time, some people have had the superior too good and have had it for too long, therefore association became limited by the daily hassles. To truly understand people, face-to-face contact is a must for the reason of bias and different people give different judgments on one same thing. Additionally, the background music is shrill and eerie, creating a sorrowful mood and a sense of desolation to the community which has a notable impact on the emotions and cerebration of the responders. Moreover, the over-the-shoulder shot gives people the impression from personal observation, deduced a fact that without contact, the people in the landfill will never be known In any society exists a harsh reality between some particular groups of people on an over-generalized belief based on an oversimplified idea on identity. Furthermore, in today’s world, there is often a connotation, both negative and positive, comes along with any occupation. Usually, garbage is perceived as something refused by people, and unpleasant. And the catadores at Jardim Gramacho are dealing with it every single day. The simile in “From far there is not ‘desmaios’, the people choking. There was none of that. They were just like little ants… doing what they do every day” depicts with words and sincere envision simile contradict the seemingly soul-crushing working condition. The catadores don’t let other people define their identity, they have their own voice. The irony in “I don’t see myself in the trash anymore” strengthen the attitude toward external factors.
