Williams College Watson Fellowship and Class of 1945 Florence Chandler Fellowship Process I. PROGRAM GOAL The Watson Fellowship and the Class of 1945 Florence Chandler Fellowship are one-year grants for independent study and travel outside of the United States. You can learn more about the Watson Fellowship program and past Watson Fellows at their website https://watson.foundation/fellowships/tj/fellows II. ELIGIBILITY All graduating seniors are eligible. Neither fellowship may be deferred. III. EVALUATION AND SELECTION OF FELLOWS A campus selection committee will evaluate all applications and select a short list of candidates for campus interviews. The campus selection committee will choose four nominees and one alternate to nominate to the Watson Fellowship competition. Successful candidates will demonstrate a passion for their project, typically a long-standing interest that is personally significant. All applicants are eligible for the College’s Class of 1945 Florence Chandler Fellowship. The criteria for the Chandler Fellowship are identical to the Watson Fellowship. IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Request access to the online Watson Fellowship portal by sending an email to Lynn Chick, Fellowships Coordinator ([email protected]) or to Katya King, Director of Fellowships ([email protected]) The application is available as of June 1. Applicants are encouraged to begin as early as possible DEADLINE: Your application must be received in this portal by 4 PM on Tuesday, October 9. Two supporting letters of reference are also due by October 9. One must be from a member of the faculty or staff of Williams College. The online application will consist of these sections: •! Demographic and bio data •! Biographical summary (100 words or less) •! Aspirations •! Activities, Awards, Employment, Education •! Travel Experience •! Languages spoken •! Equipment needs (if relevant) •! Supplemental materials (if relevant)

PERSONAL STATEMENT ฀ Up to 1500 words (maximum) The personal statement might include some discussion of your background, your college years, and your professional goals and aspirations. In other words, we ask you to describe how your project fits you -- how it reflects your talents, concerns and commitments. PROJECT PROPOSAL ฀ Up to 1500 words. The proposal should outline your project, your reasons for pursuing it, and your preparations for undertaking this project. The specific content of each should be both genuine and original. LETTERS OF REFERENCE References should be submitted online via the Watson application site on or before October 9 for review by the campus Watson/Chandler Selection Committee. Two recommendations are required and one writer must be from Williams College. There is a sample of the recommendation form in the Fellowships GLOW page. When you enter your recommender’s name and email address in your online application form, they will receive the request and instructions for submission. V. TIMETABLE (2018-19) Tuesday, October 9. DEADLINE (4:00 p.m.): Application submitted via the Watson online portal. Reference letters are also submitted online by your recommenders. Mid-October Finalists interviewed by the Faculty Selection Committee. October 25 (approx.) Nominees and alternate announced.
