Description

WEB CARTO-BIBLIOGRAPHY

1. Global Forest Watch Topic: Forest mapping. URL: https://www.globalforestwatch.org/ This website allows the observation of historical and actual deforestation in the world. In this context, users can understand the location and extent of deforestation in the main forest. This website becomes a baseline source for forest studies, and the map supports government decisions on local and national scale. The map is interactive, and the website is easy to access the information.

2. Global Surface Water Explorer

Topic: Water mapping. URL: https://global-surface-water.appspot.com/ This website provides the global extent of surface water and allows the access to information on water occurrence, change intensity, seasonal effects in the long-term period (1984 – 2018). By using google earth engine in the background, the website allows the search for specific areas, including multiple layers of information. The available dataset helps the urban management, water resource information, and shortage impact on water extension. This is an interactive map, and the loading is quite slow.

3. Earth Explorer

Topic: Source of remote sensing data. URL: https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ This website is one of the primary sources of USA remote sensing data. The users have access to multiple satellite imagery, and all these imageries are free available for any user. For instance, all Landsat datasets are available on a global scale. It is simple to use, and the download is quite fast.

4. Copernicus Global Land Service

Topic: Source of vegetation index. URL:https://land.copernicus.vgt.vito.be/PDF/portal/Application.html#Browse;Root=513186;Collection=1 000063;Time=NORMAL,NORMAL,-1,,,-1,, This website allows access to vegetation index derived from course-resolution imagery, and provides an interactive map (not robust). The user can select a specific area and define the search period. With these definitions, the URL link becomes available with vegetation index.

5. ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI)

Topic: Land cover mapping. URL: https://maps.elie.ucl.ac.be/CCI/viewer/ This website provides global land cover information on an interactive map. The product combines multiple satellite sources (MERIS, SPOT, PROBA-V) for classification at 300 m resolution. The users can explore the interactive map and download the data (easy process). The product is annually available for the 1992 – 2015 period.

6. MODIS Active Fire and Burned Area

Topic: Fire mapping. URL: http://modis-fire.umd.edu/ This website provides MODIS fire and burned area products, but it does not have an interactive map. The products are available at a 1 km resolution. There is a list of publications to support the understanding of the algorithm/method in this fire mapping. The website is updated and could be a good source of fire data.

7. Global Fire Emissions Database Topic: Fire mapping.

URL: http://www.globalfiredata.org/analysis.html This website has an interactive map of carbon emission and burned areas. The user can select specific places and easily download the information. The analysis tool allows the customization of view and chart with the data. This website involves the efforts of different research groups, including NASA fire team.

8. National Wetland Inventory Topic: U.S. wetland mapping.

URL: https://www.fws.gov/wetlands/data/Mapper.html This website provides the standard mapping of wetlands in the United States. The source allows the visualization and download of shapefiles with wetland extension. The data is freely available, and the interactive map is quite easy to use/access. The user can change the layer in the legend and zoom in specific areas. The NWI is a long-term project and has several documents to understand the quality and limitations of this product.

9. USGS Water Data Topic: Source of water quality in US.

URL: https://maps.waterdata.usgs.gov/mapper/wateralert/ This website allocates water quality information in United States. The USGS uses the web portal for data distribution, and the dataset is publicly available for search and download. The water stations are point locations, and users can see what and where are the stations available in each U.S. state. By selecting the station, the description shows the site number and some information about the dataset. So, this is not a direct mapping, but it uses the GIS for data distribution.

10.

NASA EarthData

Topic: Visualization and download Earth Observation data.

URL: https://earthdata.nasa.gov/ This website allows the visualization and selection for download of most U.S. satellite programs. The high capability is the quick visualization of the dataset before you download the imagery. The access is also free, and the filters are easy to select a specific region and period of study. The site has many interactive features for fast visualization....
