The first cornerstone: o Having the ability to gather, evaluate, and synthesize information** o Once you have gathered information, you must assess and evaluate this information as to its validity and the impact it will have on the patient care plan you are developing o Once you have evaluated the information you obtained from the scene, the patient, or any bystanders, then you need to process – or synthesize – that information The second cornerstone: o The development and implementation of patient care plans** o Your care plan is almost always defined by the patient care protocols or standing orders in the EMS system where you work The third cornerstone: o Judgement and independent decision making** The fourth cornerstone: o Ability to think and work under pressure

The first stage: o Gathering information – things you see, hear, smell, or feel o This is concept formation The second stage: o Data interpretation – evaluating the information you have gathered The last stage: o Occurs after the call is over and is commonly associated with call review or critiques o Look back at the overall call and reflect on how you processed the signs and symptoms and reached the decisions that you did The Six Rs can be used to summarize what must be done on a call: 1. Read the scene 2. Read the patient 3. React 4. Re-evaluate 5. Revise the plan 6. Review your performance Excellence in prehospital care results from a constant striving to improve your practice, which requires that you always have an attitude that is open to learning
Terminology Concept Formation – Pattern of understanding based on initially obtained information Cookbook Medicine – Treatment based on a protocol or algorithm without adequate knowledge of the patient being treated Data Interpretation – The process of formulating a conclusion based on comparing the patient’s condition with information from your training, education, and past-experience Medical Ambiguity – Uncertainty regarding the specific cause of the patient’s condition
