7

Overview: unit logistics Active engagement and the pandemic Actively engaging in the tutorials (or online discussion forums) will help you both to understand the ideas discussed in the unit, and to develop your own ideas about the history and politics of international security. Because of the benefit we think active engagement brings to your learning experience, we accord it a share (10%) of your final mark. Your tutor will assign your active engagement mark at the end of the unit. Of course, 2020 is a very different year. You should absolutely not attend tutorials (or use public transport) if you are feeling unwell, even in the slightest. The teaching team will not penalise anyone who misses tutorials for conscientiously taking the correct precautions in a pandemic and staying away from campus if they feel unwell. If you miss a tutorial because you are taking the correct pandemic precautions you do not need to complete a Special Consideration request. Simply send a brief message to your tutor alerting them to your absence due to taking pandemic precautions. If you miss several tutorials due to taking pandemic precautions, your tutor may start asking you to submit something (e.g., a short, max 200 word, reflective statement answering one of the questions on that week’s worksheet) as an alternative form of active engagement. But you will not be penalised for doing the right thing and not turning up to class. Week 1

Week 1

Overview: unit content General theme (1) The Rules-Based International Order  Australia’s 2016 Defence White Paper: “Underpinning the rules-based global order is a broad architecture of international governance which has developed since the end of the Second World War. This governance framework, including the United Nations, international laws and conventions and regional security architectures, has helped support Australia’s security and economic interests for 70 years.”  Scott Morrison (July 2020): “We have been a favoured isle, with many natural advantages for many decades, but we have not seen the conflation of global, economic and strategic uncertainty now being experienced here in Australia in our region since the existential threat we faced when the global and regional order collapsed in the 1930s and 1940s. … Now, we must face that reality, understanding that we have moved into a new and less benign strategic area, one in which the institutions [and] patterns of cooperation that have benefited our prosperity and security for decades, are now under increasing – and I would suggest almost irreversible – strain.” (2) The Changing Political World Map Week 1
