DISCUSSION QUESTION FOR WEEK 4 WORD RECOGNITION/SPELLING...

Description

Identify and describe two recommended strategies to teach word recognition and two recommended strategies to teach spelling. What technology tools are available to use in instruction for both areas? How do you expect these tools to be useful in your future classroom and how might you adapt if this technology is not available to you?

Throughout my reading, I found many interesting ways that can help teach word recognition. One strategy I will implement in my classroom is word chunk technique. To practice this, I will help my students look for familiar letter chunks within a word. After that, I will break the words into small chunks and let the student read each chunk on its own, then blend the chunks together to read the full word. For example, the word winter can be broken into win/ter. Students can sound the first section of the word (win), then the second section (ter), then blend them together to read the word winter. Another word recognition strategy I will use is picture clues. This strategy can be very helpful for young and ESL students. To implement this strategy in my classroom, I will have students look at the pictures to confirm if the word makes sense. Syntactic clues and word order clues can be helpful strategies for older students to practice word recognition (Friedman, 2019). In my observation this week, my mentor uses ABCYA and “Teach your Monster to Read” with her students. Both applications are great ways for students to practice in a fun and meaningful way. In my future classroom I will use similar applications that are adaptive to each student’s level. Technology tools are very useful and can be used for large and small group activities, as well as for individual work time. To teach spelling, I will also use the chunking strategies. This strategy can be used the same way it’s used to teach word recognition. The word planting can be broken into pl/ant/ing. Another spelling strategy for young students is through rhyming, students can practice how common sounds often translate to common spellings (Best, 2020). A few technology tools that can help develop spelling skills are ABCmouse and Alphawriter. Technology tools allow students to learn letter sounds, then accelerate to forming words, and then, sentences. Technology tools help students learn important skills when used appropriately. If technology tools are not available, my student will simply use paper and pencil, which is my favorite way to learn and teach. Reference: Best, J.
