bragged about his cruelty to people. He wanted to avenge his ex-wife betrayal. Fled from all his problems. Moved to Chicago and found work as a seaman where he got appendicitis on sea. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks and enjoyed attention from the nurses. He tried to kill himself with glass from alcohol bottle. Hotel worker found him and when taken to hospital, he was identified. He was a shy person without drugs and alcohol. (Serial Killer - A&E Biography ''Richard Speck'', 2017) Explanation: I think that Speck became a killer for many reasons. From the start, I believe that the death of his father damaged him mentally significantly. I think his dad was his most prominent role model, and the dad's death destroyed him. His mom wasn't very loving, it seemed, so I don't think he had good guidance for dealing with his father's death. When the mother remarried, I think this is where a lot of hate for women began. He started to view women as just sex objects because he would use prostitutes. After dropping out of high school, he got addicted to drugs and alcohol. It wasn't until he was bailed out of jail by his loving religious mother that he saw her as a saint again. He chose women from the idea of his mom. After three weeks, he got his girlfriend pregnant and married her. But it seems he still did not respect her. He would touch and kiss prostitutes in front of her, spent his money on prostitutes, and missed the birth of his child. He never had respect for women and had a lot of hate toward them. All of this caused a lot of sexual problems. He was shy and quiet, but his addiction to drugs and alcohol made him adventurous, bringing out a darker side of him. He was always on the run from the police, and I think he knew

he would eventually get caught and that he would do as much damage to the world as he could. He killed the eight women to prove that he could, and women didn't mean much. He wanted to show his power and dominance because he was weak and insecure. Speck was not raised with a father figure role model to be a man, so he never acted as one. He was a coward and tried to kill himself before being caught. When in prison, he took on the role of the woman he abused by taking hormones. He became the easiest target in prison. The psychiatrist said, "that was his way of paying for his crimes- to be the woman he abused to see what it felt." However, I believe his punishment was not great enough.
