IT Disciplines Jordan Ballingash

Computer science is the study of the principles and usage of computers, like finding new ways to use computers, whereas engineering is more focused on the design and building of technology. Engineering is more customer focused and tend to develop products for the customer. Information systems supports the planning, operating, and management side of business but information technology is more about the study and use of systems for storing and retrieving information. Information technology is more about the hardware a business might need. While both information technology and information systems focus on the need of a business, one just implements systems and the other repairs them. Scripting and programming go hand in hand, but there are some differences. One main difference is the scripting languages don’t necessarily need the compilation step and can just be interpreted. Scripting can make some tasks in programs automatic and can extract information from data sets. Programing is a code that tells a computer what it wants it to do. One way that programming could be used in the IT profession would be as a mobile app developer. The challenge of developing and writing scripts for that professions is that you would be writing codes for a small, wireless computer. There are advantages to that since most

mobile devices offer many different features, like Samsung Galaxies and their SPens that can pull up a camera, draw on the screen, and makes notes. Scripting can be used in IT because it can make a task automated, such as checking your work email at a certain time every day. You can script a code to run a check daily to see if there are any new updates. When I first started at SNHU, I had all intentions of staying with IT for my degree. I was planning on completing my degree and using it to help run my fiancé’s business. Within the last few weeks, we have actually started that business, received our LLC accreditation, and are fully insured. That being said, running a home renovation business is going to be more than just the computer aspects, its going to be more of a business management role. When I first was looking into IT for my career field, I definitely wanted to focus on cybersecurity because I wanted to focus on keeping our customers information safe while making purchases. One role cybersecurity has is helping analyze systems which can help make necessary improvements to the hardware and software of a company. This would help our business because having the knowledge from my degree, I could help protect our customers information or help upgrade the system to protect them even more. A mid-level position I would of eventually went for would have been an IT specialist. One thing they do within the IT field is monitor the IT system and make sure everything runs smoothly. This would of helped our business because I could have

been aware of they system and make adjustments if something was going wrong. The final position that I am going for is not in the IT field. It is to be an executive assistant with our company. I will be running the more clerical roles, such as responding to emails, messages, phone calls, and scheduling jobs but this needs some technology knowledge as well. Being an executive assistant means I’m going to be using the internet to make appointments and reply to customers meaning with this class, I should be able to keep everything running more smoothly. The positions I have chosen for the IT field require, at the least, an associates degree. There are also many certifications that can be used in each career such as CCNA which is a Cisco Certified Network Associate. Being CCNA certified means you are validated to install, configure, operate and troubleshoot networks. I think eventually down the road, I would like to get CCNA certified because then I would be able to troubleshoot our system with our business. Although I would love to stay with the information technology field, I think that moving toward a business management degree would be more worth the time and effort....
