Description

ADMS 2400 Introduction to Organizational Behavior Reflection #2 What motivates you to do your best in school and at work? Generally, when I am studying, better scores and scholarship motivates me to spend more time and efforts. And when I am working, better pay, benefits, and bonus, as well as more promotion opportunities, would motivate me to devote myself to my job. However, those abovementioned are merely obvious extrinsic outcomes on a superficial level, what else hidden or deeply inside myself also inspires me a lot from different perspectives. For instance, when I read a textbook, I may feel boring and have difficulties to understand the theories and calculations. But when I do exercises, I would have to comprehensively apply what I read from the textbook to solve problems. Similar things happen during working. I may utilize diverse skills learned from school to handle my tasks and deal with clients. When I experience the whole process and eventually overcome difficulties, especially with a complicated course or task, it gives me a sense of accomplishment, which somehow beyond any material or tangible rewards. At that time, all the devotion is meaningful and worthy. Besides, I would prefer to have the discretion to organize my study or work plans and keep receiving feedbacks from Moodle, professors, supervisors, or customers through quizzes, assignments, tests, discussions, and complaints, etc. This feedback would significantly help me objectively estimate my performance so I could make corresponding adjustments and become more effective and efficient. In the meantime, to some extent, during this special CODVID-19 period, online classes help me keep away from Self-Serving Bias. Although I naturally tend to take a lecture in person, I couldn’t control myself to blame the professor if the outcome is not as good as I wish. However, now I have nobody to blame but myself as all courses I took are online only and I must arrange everything. I have to admit that I have been motivated much more compared to the prior semester. Personally, the recognition of those intrinsic outcomes is the prerequisite for the positive motivation. If the reason why I am studying or working is just to pursue physiological and safety needs, my whole life would be a tragedy. Studying and working may become repetitive and tedious tasks in exchange for money and food to survive only. On the contrary, I would rather oppositely treat this. I am not studying or working for any others, but I would do it for myself and my family. I have seen so many students who don’t pay attention to their academic studies. They actually study for others, and they may probably feel what they are doing is to satisfy professors and parents’ expectations. It turned out that they are completely incorrect and they are wasting their precious time in the university which should have been used to practice and improve various skills so they could be more competitive when leaving school and entering the real society. In terms of myself, I have many expectations. Also, I did make connections between what I am doing now and what I am expecting in the future. I am aiming at obtaining a CPA and I have divided my ultimate goal into several comparatively smaller but feasible goals. The current goal is to get an honored degree in Accounting. I firmly believe that holding a far-sighted target and concentrating on achieving it persistently could provide a long-term or even lifetime motivation for not only me but also anyone else.
