What is distinctive about academic social research? It is research that uses social sciences ie criminology or psychology for concepts and theories. Provides peer review and follows a more refined process than research in the media etc would use Using references and other sources, generally applies a theory. Uses theoretical approach.
Why is a literature review important when conducting research? Find out what is already known, what concepts and theories have been applied to it, which research methods have been applied to it, what controversies exist about it and how it has been studied, what clashes of evidence exist, if any, who the key contributors are. It relates to the longer, ongoing study of the topic and allows you to access results from previous studies. See gaps in the knowledge, guides our question.
