Domain One: Professional Responsibility Competency Competency 1.1 Accepts responsibility for ensuring that his/her nursing practice and conduct meet the standards of the professional, ethical and relevant legislated requirements.

Competency 1.2 Demonstrates the ability to apply the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi/ Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nursing practice. Competency 1.3 Demonstrates accountability for directing, monitoring and evaluating nursing care that is provided by enrolled nurses and others. Competency 1.4 Promotes an environment that enables health consumer safety, independence, quality of life, and health.

Refer to TOW and 3 principles. NCNZ requires your practice example to be about a health consumer who identifies as Maori. Give examples for participation, partnership and protection. (Suggest 3 short sentences). Ensure you state that the RN is still accountable for any care delegated to EN or others. The RN must take into consideration the skills and competence of the person s/he delegates to. Eg, “I would ask the HCA to let me know if there were any concerns after helping the patient to shower” Lots of scope here: prevent falls by keeping floor clear, wearing shoes, protect privacy, dignity, State what your example is about Eg, :To promote independence, when showering an assist patient, I would ask what the patient could manage, and help with the interventions they could not manage”

NCNZ states this competency is about Non Maori. Remember that culture is not merely about ethnicity, but also encompasses sexual orientation, gender, age, religion etc

Domain Two: Management of Nursing Care Competency

Competency 2.1 Provides planned nursing care to achieve identified outcomes.

Nursing Care Planning and administering the interventions to achieve the desired outcomes. Give an example of your practice.

Competency 2.2 Undertakes a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment of health consumers in a variety of settings.

Competency 2.3 Ensures documentation is accurate and maintains confidentiality of information.

Competency 2.4 Ensures the health consumer has adequate explanation of the effects, consequences and alternatives of proposed treatment options. Competency 2.5 Acts appropriately to protect oneself and others when faced with unexpected health consumer responses, confrontation, personal threat or other crisis situations. Competency 2.6 Evaluates health consumer’s progress toward expected outcomes in partnership with health consumers.

Competency 2.7 Provides health education appropriate to the needs of the health consumer within a nursing framework.

Wound assessment, head to toe assessment, pain assessment, diabetes annual review, Neuro Observations using Glascow scale or any other systematic assessment Try to select an assessment you use a nursing tool for and name it- EG: Wong-Baker for pain assessment State your understanding about nursing documentation being a legal document. Give an example of how you maintain confidentiality of information, Eg: Close the computer screen, keep notes securely in the Office etc A sentence about informed consent, and an example of your practice.

Lots of scope here: Aware of how to call for emergency help, fire, earthquake, Met call, De- escalation techniques, aware of and in line with policies and procedures etc Give an example from your practice Assessing how effective the treatment, interventions and education is, in partnership with the patient, and multi disciplinary team.

Include assessment of the patient’s health literacy and delivering education at the appropriate level. Give an example of this from your practice, where you are helping the patient to understand manage their own health condition

Competency 2.8 Reflects upon, and evaluates with peers and experienced nurses, the effectiveness of nursing care.

Competency 3.3 Communicates effectively with health consumers and members of the health care team.

Student Evidence State how you introduce yourself to patients, establishing rapport and a trust relationship, and how you end this before going off shift. Give an example from your practice. Eg “In my PHC placement, I went out to the waiting room and called MrX ( the patients preferred name). I said hello, and led him into the consult room, while introducing myself by name and designation. I used active listening and demonstrated empathy and respect to maintain the relationship. At the conclusion of the appointment, I rose to my feet as an indication the appointment was at an end”

State your understanding of supporting pts/whanau to participate in their own healthcare, helping to facilitate safe self -care. Give an example from your practice. Eg, “I asked Mr Y if he was taking any over the counter medications, along with his prescribed medications. I checked to make sure there were no contra-indications for this, and it was safe to Mr Y to continue to take the fish oil tablets State how you use appropriate and effective language and communication techniques. Give an example from your practice. Eg, language boards, interpreters, ensuring hearing aids are turned on. Professional language when communicating with health colleagues.

Domain Four: Interprofessional Health Care & Quality Improvement Competency Competency 4.1 Collaborates and participates with colleagues and members of the health care team to facilitate and coordinate care.

Competency 4.2 Recognises and values the roles and skills of all members of the health care team in the delivery of care. Competency 4.3 Participates in quality improvement activities to monitor and improve standards of nursing.

Student Evidence State your understanding of the contribution the nursing team makes. Discuss how you work together, making appropriate referrals etc. Give an example from your practice. Eg, “The physio had made a mobilisation plan for Mr Z. On the pm shift, I followed the plan and assisted the pt to take a walk around the ward, as per the plan” Lots of scope. Different roles of health care team. Might encompass community services and resources that patient can be connected to.

Again lots of scope: Documentation audit- checking clinical notes have all the essential information in them. Reviewing policies and procedures and making sure they are in line with current evidence- based practice. Presenting a review of a nursing article at handover (or a more formal education session). Eg: “ The policy in regards to bedrest after skin grafts was changing in my clinical area. I familiarised myself with the new policy and attended the education session, so I was ready to implement the changes and amend my practice.”
