The operations process is essentially the transformation of inputs through a variety of activities that add value. As this process occurs it ultimately results in the production of an output, either a good or a service. For the operations process to occur effectively a business will need to construct an operational plan. This includes articulating the strategic role of operations, the goods or services that will be produced and the extent to which the operations process combines with the other key business functions for the production of the good or service to occur. Interdependence of Business Functions at Zara Zara is a subsidiary of the European retail conglomerate Inditex. It is a clothing retailer that first opened its doors in Spain in 1975, and has since grown to be found in cities the world over, including its first Australian store which opened in Sydney in April, 2012. Operations and Marketing at Zara Zara operates 1,720 stores in 74 countries worldwide and attempts to meet the needs and wants of a diverse range of customers. Zara identified the following marketing objectives: • Increasing customer satisfaction especially amongst 'plus-sized' Customers • Increasing purchase frequency • Continuing to grow the brand • Increasing brand awareness and favourable attitudes of customers.

OPERATIONS AND KEY BUSINESS FUNCTIONS: REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. Identify the key business functions present in businesses. Operations, Marketing, finance and human resources. 2. Illustrate how the operations process differs for goods and services. It differs from the use of the other key business functions and the different operational plans. 3. Outline the relationship between operations and other key business functions. The relationship between them will rely upon the marketing function and in particular the use of a range of marketing strategies in the other operations, the finance function to manage the flow of funds into and out of the business and human resources to provide for staffing requirements.

The importance of operations to the marketing process at Zara is important as given priority by Zara as it uses its store layout and strong emphasis on customer service to entice customers to visit stores more frequently. While also using pricing strategies, promotion methods and the differentiation of product qualities.

5. What is the relationship between operations and finance at Zara? The operations of Zara have an interdependent relationship with finance as they take huge roles in the business with their strategies. 6. Explain how operations and human resources support the strange workplace culture at Zara. It supports the strange workplace culture with its strong commitment to a positive workplace culture and ethical behaviour while they continue to help update on fashion and trends.

The significance of the relationship between operations and the other key business functions of marketing, finance and human resources. Businesses continually strive for a synergy of these functions in an attempt to achieve business goals in an increasingly competitive business environment.
