Zero tolerance policy Brenda Alvarado I. Introduction ATTENTION-GETTER: Imagine being thrown into an ice camp or being mistreated when you have done nothing but try and create a better life for yourself in the U.S BENEFITS TO THE AUDIENCE: This is something actually going on today and its beneficial for you all to know what it is you can do to help or to simply be aware of what is going on around you. THESIS AND PREVIEW: As Trump has enforced the zero-tolerance policy there has been an increase in ice camps and mistreatment of immigrants. TRANSITION: To be able to understand this policy and its cause and effects first we need to know what this policy actually is. Body II. Main Point 1 (full sentence): A. The zero-tolerance policy is the prosecution of all people entering the united states illegally. 1. Not only the adults but children too. Kids are separated from their families at the border. They have to talk for themselves and until the child’s immigration case is resolved which can take a long time due to how many kids are held in foster homes or shelters, ice camps. 2. Families who come seeking asylum or a better life are turned away and put through the misery of having to separate from their family and mistreatment from people working in such ice camps. 3. People believe that Trump implemented this rule but it is not true he has only enforced it. As Congressional research service says in Feb 2019 under Obama’s administration this policy was in effect but it differs in the way that Obama only targeted criminals and always kept the children with their parents unless under rare extreme conditions which is why we have to know that Trump didn’t create this policy but only enforced it to the max and changed some rules. TRANSITION: Now knowing a little about what the policy is and what it is doing let us move on too two serious effects. III. Main Point 2 (full sentence): A. We come to the question of if so many parents and children are being detained at the border, where are they being placed? The answer is ice camps. 1. As Trump has become more strict with this policy there has been an overflow of kids and adults being caught and being placed in ice camps.

2. Immigrants suffer such horrible times in these ice camps to send messages to other immigrants that if they want to come over to the united states, they shouldn’t, that there is no place for them here. As Cato Institue mentioned in July 2019 they will not release people from ice camps because officials believe it will send a message to immigrants that they can come to the U.S and officials don’t want that. TRANSITION: So we know that Ice camps are the places were detainees are being placed. III. Main Point 3(full sentence): A. But how are the individuals in these ice camps being treated? 1. Government executive in December 2017 “ found Illegal strip searches, rotten food and a lack of toilet paper number among the improper conditions.” They are being mistreated and not given the proper things to reside in the ice camps for an indefinite time period. 2. Being abused, left with nothing to cover themselves with, nothing to eat nor drink, no space to sleep properly, nothing. These are the absurd conditions individuals including little kids have to go through because they don’t have the title of U.S Citizen.

TRANSITION: In conclusion, this is not to persuade anyone to think this is bad or good but to inform you all of the horrific things going on around and how lucky some of us are the things people with no citizenship trying to enter the U.S suffer. IV. Conclusion REVIEW: We are now aware of one more thing happening around us, we have knowledge that Trump didn’t create this policy but only enforced it harshly and differently and the causes of this have been wicked. FINAL THOUGHT: Now I hope we all know that since Trump has enforced this zero-tolerance policy there has been an increase in ice camps and serious mistreatment of immigrants in these ice camps.
