Summary

Mother Tongue...

Description

1. What article did you select for your term-long critical analysis project? List the title and author here. a. I chose “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan 2. An author's purpose or goal is their reason for writing a work. Based on a literal reading of your selected article, what do you believe is the author's purpose? How did you arrive at that decision? a. The authors purpose of this article was to bring to light the struggles her mother went through in America only speaking broken English. The author wrote about a few occasions to support my decision. She wrote about a time she had to act like her mother on the phone because she is easily misunderstood and wrote about how many of her friends cannot understand her. 3. Key points* are pieces of evidence that support the author's purpose. In your selected article, what are three key points that support the author's purpose that you identified in Question 2? How do those key points support it? a. The first key point to support the author’s purpose of the article would be when she wrote about how her mother is not taken seriously and not treated correctly while at banks, restaurants, and grocery stores. b. Second key point would be when she speaks of how she was ashamed of her mother's limited grasp on the English language. She discusses how she overcame her shame by writing books in “all the Englishes.” c. The third key point is when she wrote about the different terms others and herself have used to describe her mother's English and talks about how limited people’s perceptions are of others who speak broken English like her mother.

4. An author's audience is the group or groups of people who are being addressed in the reading. What audience do you believe the author is writing for in your selected article? What potential challenges does the author face when addressing their purpose with this audience? a. I believe the audience that Amy Tan is writing for are other bilingual people who also struggle watch their parents struggle with English, and are treated differently. The challenges she could potentially face when writing to this audience could be that some take offence to what she has to say about the shame she felt. Also, there could be a lack of empathy or understanding of the difficulties of the situation....
