Ella Boddy 02/16/21 1.04 Part 1: Answer the following questions. Include the URL where you got the information from and make sure you paraphrase. 1. What does the lion represent? Why would the rulers of England include so many of them on the Coat of Arms? The lion represents bravery and strength in England, he used 3 golden lions as the symbol of all the parts of england. 2. What does the fleur-de-lis represent? Why is it featured on the Coat of Arms of British rulers? It represents purity and light in france, it was featured to represent loyalty between france and england’s alliance. 3. What does the unicorn represent? Why would the rulers of England choose a unicorn to support their shield? The unicorn represents strength and courage, it was their way to show scotland that they were conquered by england. 4. The Coat of Arms includes two phrases, "Blessed are the peacemakers" and "Shame to him who evil thinks." Choose one of these phrases and explain why a ruler might want it included in a coat of arms. “Blessed are the peacemakers” is to show people who will fight for their peace, people who try to avoid war. 5. Research one of the colors featured in the Coat of Arms. Based on what the color represents, explain why it would be used in a royal coat of arms. The color blue because it means loyalty and England wants everyone to know that they are loyal! ("Symbolism of Heraldry.")

Part 2: Create a shield of your own based on your values and lifestyle: ●

Incorporate what you have learned about heraldic colors and symbols to design your shield.

You can give it a modern twist by including symbols that represent your current interests (a golden eagle listening to an iPod, for example).

You can use any program you'd like to create your shield, including: ●

design software on your computer

web 2.0 tools

MS Paint

You may draw your shield on paper and attach a photo of it

● Part 3: Write a paragraph of at least five sentences (75-100 words) explaining how all of the elements included (shape, color, and symbols) are representative of your life and your values. Your paragraph should include proper grammar, punctuation, and other language conventions. What I value most is the truth and loyalty, so I started off with blue for my outline. In my shield I then added a Buglass (purple quatrefoil), which stands for hope and joy. I value that in my life because everyone deserves to be happy and if life isn't always going the way you want it too, then you need hope to get through it. At the top of my shield I added a chevron, to the top of my shield for protection. Adding wavy because they represent sea and water, I live near the ocean so for me it is significant in my life. As well as adding a violet, faithfulness and love is something I feel everyone needs in their lives. I value that because that is what my parents taught me throughout my life. Everyone deserves love in this life. At the top with the chevron, I added laurel leaves to represent peace. For my last square I colored in orange for ambition, added red for warrior/military strength because I am going into the military, and last but not least the ermine furs, which is black and white. It stands for dignity....
