Description

1.05 American literature For this assignment I did the 2nd prompt. I chose a short story and a poem. The poem that I chose was “Those Annual Bills” by Mark Twain. For the short story I chose “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. Both of these are part of American literature in the 1800’s/ 19th century. In “Those Annual Bills” Mark Twain expresses how life was in expenses and money, he gives the readers a sense of how life was like back then as an American when dealing with bills. Twain in his 2nd stanza, it states “Those joyous beans are passed away; Those onions blithe, O where are they?”. Furthermore, Twain is saying how there was a shortage of money to provide food because of all of the annual bills and expenses as an American back then.

In the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, instead of a story based on life issues and financial problems, this is a story in which it tells a story from a first person unnamed narrator who insists that he is sane but he suffers from a disease which causes you to be hyper and “over-acuteness of the senses”. For example, the narrator states “It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage.” Furthermore, the narrator’s senses are intensified so much to the point where he can hear the old man’s heart-beat. From this quote and description of the short story, you can tell how this short story by Edgar Allen Poe, and the poem by Mark Twain are very different even though they are from the same time period. In the short story it is more frightening and dramatic, it has more suspense and scares the readers, while in the poem it explains the real life struggles as an American....
