Keep in mind that instructors are only allowed to respond to e-mails if they were sent from an EPCC account. OFFICE HOURS: Since this is an on-line course there are no official office hours. I will be checking Blackboard at least twice a day Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

II. Text and Materials Give Me Liberty! An American History, Volume I, Fifth Edition, Eric Foner, W. W. Norton & Company. III. Course Requirements A. Computer and Internet Access Since this is an online course access to a computer with an internet connection is a necessity. Please use Google Chrome or Firefox to access Blackboard and complete assignments. Internet Explorer and Safari are not recommended. It is also not recommended to access Blackboard on a cell phone or tablet. Please use a computer or lab top, if possible, since they are more reliable. B. Grading Scale At the end of the semester, your final grade will be determined according to your total number of accumulated points [two discussions + eleven quizzes + two exams + final exam + two article (primary source) assignments + one writing assignment + extra-credit greeting message] and based on the following point system:

Exams: 100 points each. Article (Primary Source) Assignment: 10 points each. Writing Assignment: 50 points. Quizzes: 10 points each. Discussions: 10 points each. Extra-Credit Greeting Message: 10 points. The following is the point system used to measure a student’s overall academic standing in the course. 500-450 points for a grade of A 449-400 points for a grade of B 399-350 points for a grade of C 349-300 points for a grade of D below 299 is an F

There may be the possibility of extra credit later in the semester, but with the pandemic it’s not that easy. If I can come up with anything, I will let you know via Blackboard.

B. Evaluation 1. Lecture Exams, Quizzes, and other Assignments EXAMS: The exact dates of the exams will be announced by the instructor. There will be two exams and a final exam based on the book and articles and/or documentaries assigned by the instructor. These will be a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. A review will be available for each exam. Please note that these exams will be timed and students will have fifty minutes to complete the regular exams and one-hundred and seventy minutes to complete the final exam once they have opened it. The use of notes and the book is permitted during exams.

QUIZZES The instructor will notify the class ahead of time when the quizzes will take place. These will contain true/false, multiple choice, and occasionally short answer questions. The quizzes will be based on the book and on occasion some articles assigned by the instructor. Much like the exams, reviews will be provided for the quizzes. On some occasions, some quizzes may count as double. Also, there may be a possibility that one or two assignments may be given that could take the place of quizzes. Much like the exams, the quizzes will also be timed and students will have ten minutes to complete a quiz once they have opened it. OTHER ASSIGNMENTS Every semester I tend to change the topics covered on the discussions, article (primary source), and writing assignment. For that reason, details on these assignments will be given later in the semester when they are actually assigned.

2. Re-takes and Make-ups Once you have completed an exam, quiz, and any other assignment, the grade you receive will stand.

However, if for any reason you cannot take the exam or quiz when scheduled, it is your responsibility to inform the instructor within the week of the scheduled exam or quiz day. Moreover, please be aware that Blackboard, like any technology, has its occasional problems. If you encounter problems with Blackboard when you are completing an exam or other assignments, please inform the instructor immediately within that same day. Be aware that Blackboard is very good at showing the instructor whether or not you had technical problems while attempting to complete an assignment (i.e. exam, quiz, etc.) If Blackboard shows that there was no malfunction then you will not be allowed to make-up the assignment.

3. Announcements An announcements page will be available to show when the impending exams/quizzes, assignments, and/or discussions that are due. This page will also provide instructions on how to access these exams, quizzes, and assignments. 4. Assignments/Discussion Boards: Make sure to check Blackboard at least twice a day. The exact dates of these discussions will be announced by the instructor. Class participation is required. The student must visit and participate in class discussions. I will post topics and you are required to respond to my original topic and then respond to at least two of your classmates’ comments. Each topic has a due date and is time sensitive, failure to do the assignment on time will result in a zero. a. Each discussion will relate to topics from the course. It is possible another assignment may be given that may will take the place of a discussion. 5. Late Assignments: Any comments posted after the due date will not receive credit. Follow the instructions provided for you carefully, if not, you will run the risk of receiving a low grade for the assignments. It is suggested that you post on the Discussion Boards way prior to the due date. If you wait for the last minute to post you will run the risk of the system kicking you out due to high traffic, therefore it will be incomplete. Do not risk your grade! The due dates are there as a guide, if you post your assignments before the due date you will limit your margin of error. This is for all assignments during the semester. c. Sending assignments to the proper location: All assignments have instructions of where they are to be submitted. Make sure you follow instructions, assignments may not be sent via e-mail. If you do so, it will not be graded.

IV. Instructor’s Policies 1. Accomplishment of Course Objectives Students are expected to accomplish the objectives of the course. This involves class attendance and participation; taking quizzes and exams; and completing any writing assignments issued by the instructor.

2. Disruptive Behavior Do not violate the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct concerning disruptive behavior. Do not interfere with the teaching and learning of the course objectives. Students who distract in such ways will be requested by the instructor to stop, and if they continue dropped from the course. There is a zero-tolerance policy to any type of bullying and harassment.

a. Cyber-bullying Any student caught distributing information that is not related to the course and harasses course members will also be asked to stop. If the behavior continues and requires a secondary notice then the student will be dropped from the course. b. Internet Etiquette Blackboard was created for academic purposes only. The use of any language considered foul and/or disrespectful should not be used on any assignments. Students caught using this type of language will be given a zero for that assignment.

3. Scholastic Dishonesty Students who are caught, by the instructor or another person in authority, violating the Student Code of Conduct provisions concerning cheating on a test/quiz, and plagiarism will be given a grade of zero on the test or assignment involved. Students are allowed to use notes and the textbook on exams and quizzes. However, students cannot work in groups to complete exams and quizzes. Doing so would be considered cheating. If the same student is caught plagiarizing and/or cheating a second time then the student will be dropped from the course.

4. Grade of “W” The last day to drop the course with a “W” is on November 13th, 2020. If you’re not doing well in the course and can’t accumulate enough points to pass, then dropping the course would be recommended. Getting a “W” in the course would be much better than earning an “F.” If you are going to drop the course then I would recommend dropping at least one to two days before the drop date. If you’re unsure how to drop a course, then please inform the instructor several days prior the drop date. Students are allowed to drop six classes while at EPCC.

5. Drop Policy Students may be dropped from the course before or on the Drop Date to receive a “W” for any of the following:  If a student has not accessed the course through Blackboard within the first three weeks of the semester, they will be dropped from the course.  If a student is logging into Blackboard but has not completed any of the actual assignments (not including extra credit assignments) before the drop date, they may be dropped from the course. 6. Students with Disabilities See Disability Statement in Official Course Syllabus.

V. Contacting the Instructor 1. Course Messages Course Messages will be the central method of contact between the instructor and the students. The email provided on the first page should only be used in the case that Blackboard is down or you are unable to log onto Blackboard. The instructor will check the Course Messages at least twice a day Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you send a message or an e-mail during the school week and I have not responded within a 24-hour period then please be patient and don’t panic. I’m not purposely ignoring you; it might be that I either accidentally missed it or it never went through. In some recent cases, there have been issues with the system where messages and e-mails did not arrive until several days later. Just resend the message one more time.

Messages sent during non-working school days (i.e. weekends and holidays) may not be answered immediately so please be patient. Students are NOT allowed to send mass-emails through Course Messages. If you have any concerns with the material contact me, if it is a technical issue contact the EPCC Technology Help Desk at

(915) 831-6440. You can also contact them at [email protected], but be mindful that you will typically receive a response to an e-mail request within three working days. If you are having an issue with Blackboard then contact the EPCC Blackboard Help Desk at 1-888-296-0863.
