Topics covered will include general child development theories, mental health disorders in child and adolescents (as defined by the DSM5), and social, familial, and cultural factors that influence the development and course of mental health disorders in today’s youth. This course will also provide information on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for children and adolescents, so that students may better understand the process for addressing mental health disorders in youth from a therapeutic standpoint. TEXTBOOKS Wicks-Nelson, R. & Israel, A.C. (2016). Abnormal Child and Adolescent Psychology (8th ed.). New York, NY: Routledge. **This text book is required in the course!** American Psychiatric Association (2013). Desk reference to the Diagnostic Criteria from the DSM-5. Arlington, VA: Author. **This is NOT required but STRONGLY recommended** ***Books can be ordered from www.Amazon.com or the UB Bookstore online at www.ubuffaloshop.com. Online ordering promotes safety and social distancing for all students and is strongly encouraged.*** FORMAT The course will follow an online format. Material will be presented via LIVE, REAL TIME LECTURE each MONDAY from 3:00pm-5:40pm. Readings and notes will be discussed during lectures. Discussion boards, research paper, mid-term and final exam make up your final grade. Your final paper is expected to be submitted online via SAFEASSIGN. Students are expected to read assigned materials prior to the LIVE LECTURE each week. WEEKLY READINGS, NOTES, DISCUSSION BOARDS, MID-TERM, RESEARCH PAPER, and FINAL EXAM WILL BE POSTED IN “FOLDERS” BY WEEK DATE UNDER THE “WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS” section on UB LEARNS. TECHNOLOGY RECOMMENDATION To effectively participate in this course, regardless of mode of instruction, the University recommends you have access to a Windows or Mac computer with webcam and broadband. For this class, you should have access to a Windows or Mac computer with webcam and broadband. Internet access is available on any part of the UB North or UB South Campuses. In addition you will need access to Zoom, Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, and UB Learns which will require being checked numerous times throughout the week. ONLINE POLICIES It is expected that each student will join the Zoom online class session promptly at or before 3pm each Monday. Students are permitted to have their cameras and microphones on during lecture to allow for a more casual format and allow discussion to flow between professor and students. Just like myself, I expect each of you to be respectful of your words and expression during class. Many feelings are running high now, please be mindful of what you say and how you say it. In addition, it is expected that each student will be respectful of each other’s Discussion Board posts throughout the duration of the semester. As a team, we will show each other grace and flexibility during this time of online learning and uncertainty with the Coronavirus as well as the current conditions in our world. RESEARCH PAPER REQUIREMENTS

Each student is expected to submit a “Title Page” or a “Cover Page” with their Research Paper. The Title or Cover Page will include the name of the paper, your name, instructor’s name, and the class name. All papers are expected to be typed, double spaced, and in a 12pt Times New Roman font. You are expected to spell and grammar check your work prior to submitting it. It is expected that any work that needs to be cited is done in APA format. Please see me if you have any questions. I would be happy to assist you! You will be deducted points for not following any of the above guidelines. GRADING/ASSIGNMENTS 1. DISCUSSION BOARDS- 13 points Participation will be earned each week via a response on the discussion board. The instructor will post a discussion board question or comment to which each student is expected to submit a thoughtful response. Each week, your response will earn you your weekly participation grade. It is only necessary for you to post 1 response per week to the discussion board. You DO NOT have to respond to a peer. Each week the discussion board will be tied to the topic being covered by the weekly notes and reading. Each discussion board is worth 1 point. There are a total of 13 discussion boards x 1 point each = 13 available points 2. MIDTERM EXAM- 31 points The midterm exam will consist of True/False and Multiple Choice questions covering topics from the BEGINNING of the semester through the MIDTERM. This will include materials covered in class discussion, readings, and case examples. There will be a total of 31 questions on the exam; each question will be worth 1 point. We will review during the online class prior to the midterm exam. The MIDTERM Exam will be made available from 12:01am-11:59pm on OCTOBER 19, 2020. The exam and will be found under the “Exams and Research Paper” tab of UB Learns. THERE ARE NO MAKE UPS, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! 3. RESEARCH PAPER- 25 points In this assignment, students will be required research a child mental health disorder that is being discussed in class this semester. Each student must

then write a 3-5 page paper (see paper writing requirements as stated above!), answering the following questions: 1. What is your child mental health disorder you have selected? Give a thorough description of the topic, naming the ages it primarily effects, statistics, etc. 2. Identify and described a MINIMUM of one (1) established assessment tools that screens for OR evaluates symptoms of this disorder. Your description should include the format, types of questions, who may provide answers to questions (parents, patient, teachers, etc), how effective the tool is and how to interpret the results. 3. Come up with a comprehensive list of PROTECTIVE FACTORS that would OR could potentially PROTECT the child from this specific mental health disorder which you are researching. (Think of the ACES Study while writing this section!) **See Grading Rubric for full break down of points which can be found under the “Lecture Notes, Course Documents, and Rubrics” on UB Learns** **EACH STUDENT WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUBMITTING THEIR PAPER USING SAFEASSIGN ON UBLEARNS. If you do NOT hand in your research paper on time, you will automatically have a 5 point grade reduction off the top! Each additional day your paper is late, you will be docked 5 points per day!! Late papers will NOT be tolerated! RESEARCH PAPERS ARE TO BE SUBMITTED VIA SAFEASSIGN UNDER THE “Exams and Research Paper” Tab of UB Learns BY 11/2/2020 AT 11:59pm!!!! 4. FINAL EXAM- 31 points The final exam will consist of True/False and Multiple Choice questions covering topics from the MIDTERM through the END of the semester. This will include materials covered in class discussion, readings, and case examples. There will be a total of 31 questions on the exam; each question will be worth 1 point. We will review during the online class prior to the final exam. The FINAL Exam will be made available from 12:01am-11:59pm on DECEMBER 7, 2020. The exam and will be found under the “Exams and Research Paper” tab of UB Learns. THERE ARE NO MAKE UPS, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! 5. EXTRA CREDIT- 5 points

Each student is allowed to complete extra credit in the form of presenting your Research Paper to the class via Discussion Board. A discussion board forum will be created under “Assignments,” then “Folders.” Your job is to highlight your paper with as many facts as you can, and what you believe your classmates will find interesting about your research. You may choose to complete this activity to boost your grade by up to 5 points. I anticipate you will put thought and effort into this for the FULL 5 points. Less effort is equal to less points earned. You are NOT obligated to complete extra credit! Extra credit will be found in the discussion board forum. In this Course, your final grade will be based out of 100 points total available points. The grading scale in the class breaks down as such: 92 or more pts - A 88 to 91 pts - A84 to 87 pts - B+ 80 to 83 pts - B 76 to 79 pts - B72 to 75 pts - C+ 68 to 71 pts - C 64 to 67 pts- C60 to 63 pts - D+ 56 to 59 pts - D 55 or fewer pts - F *At any point in the semester I would be happy to meet and discuss your grade with you!* **If you choose to complete the Extra Credit, there is a total of 105 points available to you to earn over this course of the semester.**

Incompletes: A grade of Incomplete (I) indicates that additional coursework is required to fulfill the requirements of a given course. Students may only be given an “I” grade if they have a passing average in coursework that has been completed and have well-defined parameters to complete the course requirements that could result in a grade better than the default grade. An “I” grade may not be assigned to a student who did not attend the course. Students must initiate the request for an “I” grade prior to the end of the semester, and receive the instructor’s approval. Assignment of an “I” grade is at the discretion of the instructor.
