Another Chemical Reactions Worksheet 1. Write the balanced equation for the reaction that occurs (if any) between the following pairs of reactants.  

Indicate the states of all species (use a solubility table, if necessary). Classify by type of chemistry: precipitation, neutralization, combustion, redox, gasforming reactions.

a. Solid sucrose (C12H22O11) is burned in air. C12H22O11 (s) + 12 O2 (g) → 12 CO2 (g) + 11 H2O (g)

Combustion

b. Solid mercury (II) oxide decomposes into its elements. 2 HgO (s) → 2 Hg (l) + O2 (g)

Redox

Reactant HgO: Hg has oxidation number +2, oxygen has oxidation number of -2 Products:

Hg (element) has oxidation = 0 Molecular oxygen, O2, is element and has oxidation number = 0

c. Aqueous barium hydroxide reacts with a solution of hydrobromic acid. Also write the total and net ionic equations. Ba(OH)2 (aq) + 2 HBr (aq) → BaBr2 (aq) + 2 H2O (l)

Neutralization

Total ionic:

Ba2+(aq) + 2 OH-(aq) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 Br-(aq) → Ba2+(aq) + 2 Br-(aq) + 2 H2O (l)

Net ionic:

OH-(aq) + H+(aq) → H2O (l)

d. Solid sodium bicarbonate reacts with nitric acid solution. Also write the total and net ionic equations. NaHCO3 (s) + HNO3 (aq) → NaNO3 (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)

Gas-forming

Total ionic:

Na+(aq) + HCO3-(aq) + H+(aq) + NO3-(aq) → Na+(aq) + NO3-(aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)

Net ionic:

HCO3-(aq) + H+(aq) → H2O (l) + CO2 (g)

e. Ammonium nitrate solution is added to aqueous calcium chloride. 2 NH4NO3 (aq) + CaCl2 (aq) → 2 NH4Cl (aq) + Ca(NO3)2 (aq)

No reaction (both products soluble)

f. Sodium phosphate solution is added to an aqueous solution of barium chloride. Also write the total and net ionic equations. 2 Na3PO4 (aq) + 3 BaCl2 (aq) → Ba3(PO4)2 (s) + 6 NaCl (aq)

Precipitation

Total ionic: 6 Na+(aq) + 2 PO43-(aq) + 3 Ba2+(aq) + 6 Cl-(aq) → Ba3(PO4)2 (s) + 6 Na+(aq) + 6 Cl-(aq) Net ionic:

2 PO43-(aq) + 3 Ba2+(aq) → Ba3(PO4)2 (s)

g. Potassium metal reacts when it is added to CuCl2(aq). Also write the two half-reactions and label the oxidation and reduction reactions. 2 K(s) + CuCl2 (aq) → 2 KCl (aq) + Cu (s) Oxidation:

2 K → 2 K+(aq) + 2 e-

Reduction:

Cu2+ + 2 e- → Cu

Redox

h. Aqueous copper(II) nitrate is added to zinc metal and a reaction occurs. Also write the two half-reactions and label the oxidation and reduction reactions. Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + Zn (s) → Cu (s) + Zn(NO3) (aq) Oxidation:

Zn → Zn + 2 e-

Reduction:

Cu2+ + 2 e- → Cu

Redox

i. Hydrochloric acid solution reacts with solid potassium sulfite. 2 HCl (aq) + K2SO3 (s) → 2 KCl (aq) + SO2 (g) + H2O (l) Gas-forming j. Acetic acid solution is added to potassium hydroxide. HCH3O2 (aq) + KOH (aq) → KCH3O2 (aq) + H2O (l)

Neutralization

2. Indicate the oxidation number for each element in the following ions or compounds: a. MgH2 Mg = +2 H = -1

d. XeO42-

Xe = +6 O = -2

b. ClO3- Cl = +5

O = -2

e. HNO3

H = +1

c. UO22+ U = +6

O = -2

f. MnO4-

Mn = +7

N = +5 O = -2 O = -2...
