Repeat Courses

In accordance with StudentAidBC policy, repeat courses cannot be included to meet the minimum course load requirements. Repeat courses are defined as courses that you previously received credit for. If you previously failed or withdrew from the course you are repeating (received an F, N, WD or WE grade) this course will not be treated as a repeat and will be counted in your overall term course load. If a student is enrolled full-time in addition to the repeat course (i.e., be full-time not including the repeat course) the student is eligible to receive their student loan funding and/or have their interest-free status confirmed. Students repeating courses solely to improve their grades are not eligible for student financial assistance, regardless of whether the student paid for tuition costs or was in receipt of student financial assistance. 

Exception: If a student passed a course but did not obtain the grade required to proceed to the next level of the program, StudentAid BC may give consideration on an appeal basis. Information on how to appeal a repeat course can be found in the “Repeat Course” Appeal through StudentAidBC, https://studentaidbc.ca/sites/all/files/formlibrary/appeal_repeatcourse.pdf. If the appeal is approved, the repeat course can be included to meet the minimum course load requirements.

NOTE: If your repeat course appeal is denied or you do not wish to submit a repeat appeal, you could apply for part-time financial assistance (if you are enrolled in 3-8 eligible units). For further information, please visit https://studentaidbc.ca/apply/how-to-apply#part-time.

CONFIRMATION OF ENROLLMENT If you have received a “Notice of Assessment” from StudentAidBC indicating you are eligible to receive funding and/or have applied online for interest-free status for the term, be aware that SFU is required to provide an electronic confirmation of enrollment to StudentAidBC authorizing the release of your funding and/or approving your interest-free status. At SFU, we start to confirm StudentAidBC funding two weeks before the official first day of classes. SFU provides confirmation of enrollment on a daily basis. You are encouraged to check on the status of your funding through the National Student Loans Service Centre online portal: https://www.csnpenslsc.canada.ca/. Confirmed funding will be released to students starting on the first day of classes.

IMPORTANT! Your student loan funding will not be released and/or your interestfree status will not be approved unless ALL of the following apply: 1.

YOUR CORRECT SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER (SIN) IS ON YOUR SFU RECORD

You must have your correct SIN on your SFU student record. Use the self-service option through your go.sfu.ca student to update your SFU student record information with your SIN. 2.

YOUR SURNAME ON YOUR SFU RECORD MATCHES EXACTLY WITH THE SURNAME ON YOUR STUDENT LOAN AND/OR INTEREST-FREE APPLICATION

Your (primary) surname on your SFU student record must match exactly with your surname on your student loan application (e.g. spelling, hyphen or spaces, multiple last names). To update your SFU student record, you must complete and submit a “Student Name Change Application” form. You can download the form at: https://www.sfu.ca/content/dam/sfu/students/pdf/change-nameapplication.pdf. 3.

THE PROGRAM YOU SELECTED ON YOUR STUDENT LOAN AND/OR INTEREST-FREE APPLICATION MATCHES EXACTLY THE ELIGIBLE PROGRAM WHICH YOU ARE REGISTERED IN AT SFU

If the program you have selected on your student loan application does not match your StudentAidBC eligible program at SFU, SFU Financial Aid and Awards will email you information on how to update your program of study. Your StudentAidBC confirmation of enrollment will not happen unless the program information matches. * See details and exceptions for non-degree, coop and study abroad terms on page 2 * 4.
