1984 Study Questions: Chapter Six, Seven and Eight Tara Rafi 21. What is the aim of the party regarding sex? Why? The aim of the party regarding sex is to have it serve as only a mechanism to reproduce and create offspring and nothing more. The party wants to ensure no pleasure is derived from sex for the civilians. They do this because they do not want people creating loyalties to other individuals besides to Big Brother and the Party. 22. Why does “hope [lie] in the Proles”? Hope lies in the Proles because they make up the majority of the population (85%), and are not monitored as heavily as inner party members. This is because the Party views Proles as animals and unintelligent so they have no suspicion that they will rebel. The Proles would be easily able to overthrow the Party, they just need to recognize their strength, but this is something that may never happen. 23. Why does the Party not attempt to indoctrinate the Proles? They do not indoctrinate the Proles because they view them as animals and are not worried they will overthrow them because they are so unintelligent and easily distracted by things the Party gives them appealing to their basic senses. It is also difficult to monitor so many of them since they make up such a large portion of the population. 24. What lie does Winston discover? What does Winston begin to doubt? Winston discovers a photograph of three dignified Party members in New York when they were supposedly said to be in Eurasia committing treason. This shocks Winston because it shows that the Party is constantly altering history. He begins to doubt the truthfulness of the government. “The instant he had flattened it out he saw its significance. It was a half-page torn out of ‘The Times’ of about ten years earlier—the top half of the page, so that it included the date—and it contained a photograph of the delegates at some Party function in New York. Prominent in the middle of the group were Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford. There was no mistaking them, in any case their names were in the caption at the bottom. The point was that at both trials all three men had confessed that on that date they had been on Eurasian soil.” (99) 25. Why does Winston state, “Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two make four”? Citizens are trained from to ignore what they themselves observe and experience, and to only believe what is directly given to them. Saying this statement is a freedom because whatever the party says is to

be true. This is a reference to Hitler as one of his men had said if Hitler says two plus two is five then that is the case. “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” (103) 26. What is “ownlife”? Why is ownlife dangerous to the Party? Ownlife is free time given to civilians when they are not engaging in communal activities. This is dangerous to the Party because it gives time to civilians to think about the politics and the system of government and they could begin realizing that it is wrong and unjust. “In principle a Party member had no spare time, and was never alone except in bed. It was assumed that when he was not working, eating, or sleeping he would be taking part in some kind of communal recreation: to do anything that suggested a taste for solitude, even to go for a walk by yourself, was always slightly dangerous. There was a word for it in Newspeak: OWNLIFE” (85)

27. What is the Lottery? Why is it allowed/encouraged? The Lottery is a chance for citizens to win large prizes and sums of money. This is created by the Party specifically directed to the Proles to again appeal to their basic senses. They create fake people who win many of the big prizes but still let some of the Proles win small prizes so that they keep playing. This is encouraged because it keeps them busy and gives the Party money....
