Policy and planning 19th January 2017 Managing destinations UK tourist policy didn’t exist until 2010 Hotels were working against each other to get more tourists than each other, they should have been working together to encourage tourist to come to the destination. A national policy was needed Rationale of public sector (government) involvement Influences acting upon the public sector Organisational structure: UK- key bodies A New Tourism Policy for Britain- analysis of changes so far go to Visit Britain- How they are marketing to other countries. Hard Brexit (Leave EU and the single market) vs Lame Brexit (Just leave the EU not the single market) EU single market- only Russia is not part of this Leaving the EU will mean people need visas to travel to the UK this could decrease the amount of tourists coming into the country Canada is going to do a similar tourist policy to US Public sector as a facilitator Public sector organisation- complexity and change Role of partnership/ need for collaboration- important for exam Hull City of Culture 2017 Need to understand the nature of destinations Why are destinations falling into disrepair? What can we do to help? A policy would help build confidence, give some stability, a firmer basis on which to build a framework for action and coordination Spain marketed separately North vs South Without an affective framework for cohesion, England’s tourism will evolve into a patchwork quilt of mutually competing destinations, more natural drawn to differantation than the common purpose of improving the standards, efficiency and profitability of the tourism industry Levels of public sectors (local, regional and national) Role as a facilitator- create an environment within which the tourism industry/ various sectors can operate Facilitator- establish partnership/ more joined up approach to government Planning and policy making- i.e. link between tourism/ events and regeneration Marketing
