First and Second Wave of Feminism in the U.S. – Q & A 1 – When did the First Wave of Feminism emerge? The first wave of feminism emerged in the year 1840-1850s. It was emerging during a time of cultural change, meaning that women would question their ability to have their voice heard whether it was politically or socially. Not only their voice but the actions that they believed they were entitled to for example, Making sure they had the right to change laws that were unjust, the improvement of the educational system primarily for women, and any obstacle that would stop them from participating in regular life activities which were primarily men. 2- What was the primary focus of the First Wave, and why? The primary focus of the first wave was more about giving women the right to vote, this was caused by the fact that women were less than men and because they began to question themselves about what they could achieve. This was the primary focus because many women believed that in order to achieve any kind of equality in other topics such as having the right to be politically active they had to win the right for women to vote. And so many these women set their main priority to be able to get the right to vote. 3- What was the conflict of ideals between the “new women” of feminism, and the First Wavers? The conflict of ideals between the new women of feminism and the first wavers were very much different because their views were on the different ends of the spectrum. For example the First wavers didn't really use their voice to their full capacity, they used arguments that would have liked to be heard from men. For example the article stated “Sew the seams and cook the meals; to vote won't take us long” These women were still willing to be stay at home wifes, exposed to that everyday labor which consisted of making meals, cleaning the house, watching after the kids, sewing etc.. They were still not able to use their voice to a full capacity unlike these new women who spoke up about these kinds of issues. 4- What was Anna Julia Cooper’s declaration in the World’s Congress of Representative Women in 1896? In 1896 Julia Cooper gave a speech in the World Congress of Representative woman, in that speech she stated, “ Not till… race, color, sex and condition are seen as accidents, and not the substance of life.. Not till then is the woman's lesson taught and women's cause won”. What this can mean is that In order to win this cause you need to be able to acknowledge certain things in life that are principal to the steps leading toward the cause. Not only did she address this to white women, she addressed this african american woman and even Native American women.

5 – What were some major tensions/issues being addressed by women starting in the 1950’s and 1960’s? Some major tensions being addressed by women starting in the 1950s and 1960s were no longer about the right to vote; they were shifted to deeper issues amongst many women. For example the fact that woman were being viewed as a sex object, they were opressed and this new wave of feminist were angry about what was going on. These were issues that were not easy to dismantle because they were implemented too deep in the culture of the United States. These women no longer wanted to be a part of these traditions, and they were fighting for what they wanted.

Third Wave of Feminism – Q&A 1 - What are the 3 important tactical moves employed by the 3rd  Wave of Feminism? There are 3 important tactical moves employed by the 3rd wave of feminism. The first tactic that is used is the response to the “collapse of the category of women” meaning that they don’t use this method that the second wave feminist used which was the belief that all woman had something that connected them together. The second tactic is that the thirdwavers believed there should be just equality not only within one category of a woman but multiple. The last tactic that they used was a no judge free zone towards woman who believed in the “feminist political”. 2- What does Rebecca Walker suggest as problematic in the 2nd  wave of feminism, and how it is rd being addressed in the 3 wave? Rebecca Walker suggests that in the second wave of feminism the problem was that these feminists were way too “rigid” meaning these second wave feminist were not as flexible as these third-wave feminists. In this 3rd wave these women are being more open to new ideas, open to a different variety of women. They are no longer made up of “white middle class women” but of all kinds That was the problem with the 2nd wave of feminism, they were

focusing on only one kind of women, which was your typical feminist. The 3rd wavers gave entry to different ethnicities, women who were not economically stable, religious women. 3- What are the 4 ways in with popular literature claims third-wave feminism differs from second-wave feminism? Briefly explain each of those points. There are many ways that the third wave feminist are different from the second wave feminist and its expressed throughout the reading. Some of the ways that they differentiate are very simple and not too different from before. For example, the 3rd wavers are a group of young women who According to the reading should not be approached only because of the particular age group they perpetuate. These feminist were Young unlike the 2nd wavers. The second thing that the reading claims about these third-wave feminists is that Unlike the second-wave feminist these feminists were less Judgemental, This meant that they were not opposed to trying new things they were actually anti-sex and they believed that they should be able to have pleasurable moments with men. The third claim that the reading makes about the third Wavers being different from the second wavers is that these woman We're more accepting too all kinds of women meaning that they were supportive of Whomever decided to join them whether it was someone poor weather it was a woman who would wear makeup or Woman who weren't your typical “feminist” and they were religiously different . The last claim that the reading makes about these third-wave feminists is That unlike the second-wave feminist these feminists had a different take on politics they were more opened to politics And they were willing to not only focus on issues concerning females but being more involved in other kind of issues within politics. 4- How does CR have a similar and contrasting role between the 2nd  and 3rd  wave of feminism? Consciousness-raising has a similar and contrasting role between the second and third wave of feminism because in the second wave of feminism CR was used as a way to be able to acknowledge The problem that patriarchy can bring amongst women and the “things that they are supposed to do”. Unlike the second wave the third wave did not believe in CR Simply because they don't believe in this method. Although they don't practice this belief they still believe that Looking into these experiences can gain women knowledge, And they also have come up with their own kind of “CR” 5- In what ways are 3rd  wave feminist critical of media? Third-wave feminists are critical of the media because They are not well represented In the media. There are many media platforms that tried to represent these third-wave feminists but in reality these feminists never felt represented because it's something that they couldn't see themselves in that position. These were very bad representations of what feminists were like or

what they spelled or how they lived and so these feminists didn't feel like they can truly reflect on how the media was “representing them” when in reality it wasn't like that. 6- In what ways does the 3rd  wave of feminism a more inclusive movement? Be specific with your examples. The third wave of feminism is a more inclusive movement because they accept different kinds of women. For example Previous feminists like the first and second seem to be a bit more conservative than these third wavers. This shift creates a more welcoming environment for women who were not particularly conservative or had the same beliefs as these previous women. The fact that these third-wave feminists have become more diverse and are accepting different ethnicities, different cultures, different identities is more welcoming than ever and just shifts this movement into something bigger because now there will be more women than ever perpetuating this and being more active than ever....
