The author’s purpose of this article was to illustrate the importance of higher education

and the contrast of life with and without it. He utilized his summers working in factory assembly lines to present the reality of life for many people who weren’t fortunate enough to experience the cushy college life he’s come to know. The author’s literary style was simplistic and revealing, he aimed to lay out his experiences so that the reader could follow along with his train of thought and come to appreciate his perspective. The author’s humbling tone comforts the reader and accept his point without the annoyance of condescendence and bias. From the first read I noticed how much insight the author has from several perspectives of life from the blue-collar world to the campus landscapes and how much discipline he has to be able to take those perspectives and grow appreciation for his path and respect for others on another path.

I believe that a closer analysis of the author’s claim and structure of the writing will help

me learn more about the reading by giving me more details to work off of. I say that because in my selected article a closer analysis is helpful because you get to see why it was so important for the author to incorporate what they said in that passage. The author specifically interpreted why it was important for him to work so hard at the assembly line and get his degree in college.

Rather than giving information about going to college and being so tired day in and day out and giving no reason as to why. Also, by the author's claim and structure, I believe a closer analysis will help me learn more about the reading based on the fact of how imagery was used. When there are details where you can simply picture yourself being in that exact place, you get a better sense of understanding.

The author’s style, tone and direction all came together to perfectly culminate his purpose

of illustrating his appreciation for the working class and gratitude of the life he has chosen for himself. Had the author’s tone been anything but matter-of-factly his point would have been completely lost amongst the audience. He did not come across as rude towards the working class or totally dismissive of the difference of worlds, nor did he try to subcategorize them in a disrespectful manner. His simplistic illustration helped him to display his gratitude for the fact that he most likely won’t spend his life being underpaid in a backbreaking factory position with little job security. Additionally, once he does graduate he’ll have that real-world experience to help him navigate life beyond college....
