2-6 Project Part One: Artifacts and Theme Selection

Stary Night by Vincent Van Gogh

I chose Stary Night by artist Vincent Van Gogh. Stary Night was painted on 2’5” x 3’ 0.25” canvas with spirited oil paints on June of 1889. Vincent painted his masterpiece while in Saint-Remy, France seeking psychological treatment. The painting depicts the view from his east- facing window during his stay at the asylum, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise. Vincent Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter whose work is known for it’s thought out emotion, color, and beauty. He struggled with mental illness, was virtually unknown and lived poor throughout his life. Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting throughout his lifetime called Red Vineyard at Arles. His artwork can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Mona Lisa by Leonardo De Vinche

My second artifact is a 2’6” x 1’9” oil on painting by Leonard De Vinche titled “Mona Lisa”. Leonardo began painting the Mona Lisa in 1503, it was in his studio when he died in 1519. It is likely that he worked on this painting through out the years, adding multiple thin layers of oil. The painting was created during the Renaissance period. The Renaissance was a fervent of European culture, politics and artistic “rebirth” following the middle ages. This time period was known as the revival of learning, finding beauty in nature and naturalism.

Common Theme:

Both artist work have much in common beginning with their undeniable success; both known as the best in their era. The stary night portrayed Van Gogh’s emotions that were felt while looking out his window at the asylum and the Mona Lisa was created to convey just the right amount of happiness. By admiring and analyzing these paintings we can began to understand the true meaning of the artwork and the emotions which created them. The common theme between these two paintings is emotion and how we perceive it through art. I wouldn’t think that our emotions would apply to one single profession because they can change so rapidly and emotions are something we do our best to handle on a day to day basis.

Personal Experience

I struggled controlling my emotions as an adolescent. I found my solace through writing and poetry. This form of art allowed me to get my feelings out of me and onto paper; it felt good. Analyzing paintings, literature and music allows the viewer to understand and appreciate the message. My writing allowed me to work through issues and express them to others I trusted. It allowed me to let go of emotions I couldn’t understand and had held onto for so long. It helped me communicate with those I loved and explain my actions in ways my words could not....
