1 Artifacts and Theme Mercedes Rios HUM200
Cultural Artifacts The Great Wave was created by Katsushika Hokusai around 1830-1832 in Japan during the Edo period. The painting is now located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. And "Because I could not stop for Death" was written by Emily Dickinson in the 1860's, during the second millennium. The version of the literature that I am reading comes from the SOOMO webtext Literature Gallery. Common Theme The common theme in the two artifacts is mortality and facing death. In The Great Wave, the theme is shown by humans on a boat facing a giant wave that looks like it is about to crash down on them. Mortality and death are expressed by showing the men possibly facing their demise. In Dickinson's "Because I could not stop for Death", shows Dickinson talking about how she is too busy to meet death herself, but death comes to her instead. Th two are similar because both subjects of the work are facing their demise. Nevertheless, the way that the artifacts portray mortality and death is different. The Great Wave shows mortality with them facing their mortality by facing the wave which represents their death coming to them. On the other hand, "Because I could not stop for Death" shows mortality and death by death finding Dickinson and showing her life in stages until she reaches her final resting place. Personal Experience The further that I get into adulthood and expand my own family I think of my own mortality and how we are all facing eventual death. Before I take any actions I now have to think of how it will
2 effect my own mental and physical health because I am mortal and death will eventually find me, so I have to try and hide from it the best that I can for my own family....
