Chloroplasts -All green parts of a plant contain chloroplasts. -Leaves are major sight of photosynthesis. *About half a million chloroplasts in in a chunk of leaf (SA of 1mm^2).
-Chlorophyll is in the thylakoid membrane and is the green pigment that colors leaves. *The light energy absorbed by chlorophyll that drives the synthesis of organic molecules in the chloroplast.
Location of photosynthesis in plants
-chloroplasts are found mainly in the cells of mesophyll. *Tissue found in the interior of the leaf. -Carbon dioxide enters the leaf and oxygen exits by stomata. *Microscopic pores -Veins in plants are used to move water from roots to leaves and export sugar to roots and non-photosynthetic parts of the cell.
Parts of chloroplast -A mesophyll cell (20 um) has around 30-40 chloroplasts (2-4um by 4-7 um). -A stroma is an envelope of two membranes surrounding a dense fluid in chloroplasts. -Thylakoids are sacs suspended inside the stroma that separate the stroma from the thylakoid space inside the sacs. -Grana are columns where thylakoid sacs are stacked (In some places)
