Instructor: Mark Combs, Ph.D. Phone: (949) 397-1600 Office Hours: By appointment via phone Email: [email protected] Catalog Description: Introduction to basic research methods used in the social sciences including such topics as research design, experimental procedures, descriptive methods (naturalistic observation and correlational studies), instrumentation, and the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research data. PREREQUISITE: MATH G160 or PSYC G140 and PSYC G100. Golden West College Student Learning Outcomes for PSYC G280: 1. Apply important research topics such as the scientific method, research designs, measurement, data collection techniques, sampling, hypothesis testing, experimental and non-experimental methods, and ethical issues in research. 2. Identify, interpret, and critically evaluate relevant research topics from published empirical studies. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the research process through constructing, implementing, and conducting an original research study, including quantitative data analysis and presenting the results in an APA style presentation and paper. Course Objectives: 1. Explain the basic principles of the scientific method 2. Critically evaluate research reports 3. Develop and test hypotheses 4. Select appropriate research designs to test hypotheses 5. Demonstrate knowledge of general research designs, experimental and non-experimental methods, and standard research practices 6. Design and develop effective psychological measures 7. Select, apply, and understand appropriate statistical tests 8. Assess the validity, reliability, and generalizability of study results 9. Explain the ethical treatment of human and animal participants in research and the institutional requirements for conducting research 10. Demonstrate proficiency in APA style manuscript writing and oral presentation

Course Materials: Technology Course Website - All course related materials will be posted on Canvas. There is a Canvas app for your phone, or you can find Canvas online using this link, you will login with your GWC user name and password: http://canvas.cccd.edu/ Software: Google Sheets for our lab assignments. It’s free and easy to use, instructions will be provided. Zoom will be used for our live online lecture on Tuesday nights.

Coursework / Course Grading Summary Exams (200 points) Exam 1 = 50 points, 10% of grade – covers chapters 1, 2, 3 Exam 2 = 50 points, 10% of grade – covers chapters 4, 5, 6 Exam 3 = 50 points, 10% of grade – covers chapters 7, 8, 9 Exam 4 = 50 points, 10% of grade – covers chapters 10, 11, 12, 13 Lab Assignments (50 points) – Instructions will be posted on Canvas and discussed in class Lab 1 = 25 points, 5% of grade (date sets will be provided) Lab 2 = 25 points, 5% of grade (data sets will be provided) Online Assignments (50 points) There will be 4 online assignments, each is worth 12.5 points each (2.5% each). Observational Study / Paper (200 points) – Instructions will be posted in Canvas / discussed in class Each student is required to submit an APA 7th style research proposal which must consist of the components typically found in an academic research proposal. These paper must include the following sections: introduction, literature review, and a methods section.

Final Letter Grades Final letter grades will be based on the percentage of total points earned in the class. The following scale will be used in assigning final letter grades (fractional grades are rounded up to the next grade level: 90% - 100% = A 80% - 89% = B 70% - 79% = C 60% - 69% = D ≤ 59% = F

Online Attendance It is the responsibility of students to login to Canvas regularly and not miss course work. Students not attending class without a formal/documented reason will miss in-class assignments and they can’t be made up. Since we will have either an in-class assignment, or an exam, there will be no sign-in sheet. If students do not attend class regularly during the first two weeks of the semester they will be dropped. After the first two weeks of semester it is up the student to withdraw themselves from the class if they no longer wish to attend.

If you’re having any problems with the course or experiencing a personal issue that inhibits you from completing your coursework, please contact me ASAP. Academic Dishonesty Policy Cheating constitutes academic dishonesty and, in general will be handled as part of the course grading process. Penalty may range from no credit for the assignment up to and including exclusion and/or an “F” grade for the course. Plagiarism (the theft of language, ideas or thoughts from another that are represented as one’s own original work) and cheating are serious offenses and will not be tolerated. Disciplinary actions for such offenses include an “F” on the test or assignment, “F” in the course and/or possible expulsion from the college. Missed Exams and Missed Assignments Missed exams, or late lab assignments will not be accepted unless: 1) illness or injury to the student; 2) death, injury, or serious illness of an immediate family member or the like; 3) religious reasons (California Education Code section 89320); 4) jury duty or government obligation. Submission of official written proof is required. There will be no makeup exam without documented proof.
