Description

CMLIT 102W-Global Literatures II [From a Crooked Rib] Ending of From A Crooked Rib ● Ebla received the letter with a photo of Awill and another woman, she becomes disappointed in herself ○ "There were many things that came to Ebla’s mind, but she was determined about one thing: she would not run away. She had run from the country to a town, and from there to Mogadiscio. Now if she ran from Mogadiscio, she would run into the ocean. "(125) ● Asha suggests for Ebla to talk with the rich man (Tiffo) that Asha knows; he takes interest in her ○ He meets her, faked payed her money to see her face then falls asleep on the bed ● "The suggestion to marry Tiffo was Asha’s, the one to marry Awill was the widow’s, the one to get engaged to an old man in the country (she had even forgotten his name now) was her grandfather’s. It was always someone else’s suggestions that she either accepted or rejected. One is fed with suggestions all through one’s life, starting from the time one comes into this world and ending when one dies. ‘Do this; do that; don’t do this; don’t do that,’—that is life. But it is a life that has been poisoned, the potion has been fed to us, like medicine. This is the medicine we live on, the medicine we eat and drink, but do we realize it?" (131) ● (139) The brother and widow came to visit Ebla & told her that their grandfather passed away ○ He died the day after she left of shock ● Tiffo came to visit Ebla one night to tell her about the wife finding out about their affair…he wanted a divorce ● Asha wanted Ebla to stay with Tiffo for the money, but Ebla wanted to be an independent woman & wanted to make her own choices. ○ (145) "Eventually she did manage to tell Asha to keep out of her own affairs. Then Ebla was happy. ‘I am master of myself. The widow is not here. My cousin is not here. My brother has gone home and will never come back to give me orders. Tiffo is not here, so nobody can give me orders—at least, not until Awill comes home. And when he comes home, which will not be long now, I will tell him what he deserves. I am master of myself." ● (148) Tiffo and Ebla get into an argument over their affaris with whom. Ebla sets him straight "‘We are not equal. You are a woman and you are inferior to me. And if you have another husband, you are a harlot,’ said Tiffo"

Last chapter 30 ● Ebla confronts Awill about his affair, asks him if he ate pork (slept with another) ● "‘That is what makes you look thinner. You ate something forbidden by our religion. It is a bastard’s diet. It does not agree with your stomach and you will get sick—worms and all that." ● She slept with him and promised to tell him everything in the morning..same with him For our class tomorrow, reflect on the last part of the novel. How does it end? How plausible is the ending? What becomes of Ebla? How do Asha and Ebla discuss or broach the effects and implications of polyandry? The novel opens with a Somali proverb and ends with a Sicilian proverb. Any reflections? What does the Sicilian proverb mean? How does the epigraph relate to the narrative? Recap: ● Master-slave dialects ● Helot ● Cook ● Epiphany : A realization/life changing moment ● Tone ● Epigraph ● Sicilian proverb - "Don't tamper with camarina" ○ Greek goddess ○ Sicilian proverb reflects on her culture and what she grew up understanding ● A piece of advice ● Alliteration ● A grammar of values ● The fundamentals ● Rebellion punishment Phoenix - Antithesis ● James Dean- "Rebel Without a Cause" ● Punishment : A harsh treatment based on your actions; consequence of actions ● Revival, revolutionary ● The city went through a lot of hardship until it was permanently established until roman times ● Shows she triumphs in the end ● Linear ● Goaded : tricked or persuaded into doing something ● Grandfather wanted Ebla to marry the broker, Widow wanted her to marry nephew, Asha wanted Ebla to marry Toffi ● Polyandry : "many"; more than one ● Dreams of camel heard in her village… ● Wealth education
