Folk and Ethnic Music Ethnic music is identified with a particular culture and is usually performed by trained musicians It is important to know something about folk/ethnic music because elements of it are sometimes found in concert music; it reveals the attitudes and values of a culture; and the peoples of the world today are interconnected as never before Each type of music, however, has performance traditions and practices that the musicians are expected to follow Folk/ethnic music differs from concert music in several ways: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Creators of such music are usually unknown Performers usually feel free to make small changes in it Some of it is largely improvised within the guidelines of the type of music The response of an audience, if there is one, is not important It contains subtleties that are easily missed by persons who are unfamiliar with that type of music 6. Much of it does not exist in notation, but is preserved by oral tradition

Folk/ethnic instruments can be divided into four groups according to how they produce sounds:

   

Aerophones – produce sound when air is blown into them Ideophones – percussion instruments other than drums such as rattles and xylophones Membranophones – include the wide variety of drums with heads made from animal skin Chordophones – include all types of string instruments

All folk music is ethnic music, but not all ethnic music is folk music because ethnic music of a culture may not be the music of the common people Folk music has influenced… 1. 2. 3. 4.
