CMD 409 February 2, 2021 Part One:

1. Find a hearing aid that would be recommended for children and describe its special features, especially those advantageous to children.

The hearing aid I chose is the Phonak Sky Marvel, which is a behind-the-ear (BTE) aid. BTE hearing aids are ideal for children because they are coupled with an earmold (Morgan, 2021). This hearing aid is rechargeable, which is ideal for long days at school. The hearing aid is tamper-proof, meaning a child cannot remove any batteries or parts. It’s available in a variety of colors, allowing children to express themselves. It is also available in skin-tone shades, if a child wants to be discreet about their hearing aid. The Phonak Sky Marvel has an indicator light, giving parents and teachers assurance that the hearing aid is powered on and functioning (Phonak, n.d.).

2. Select one ALD for this pediatric patient and explain how it would be coupled/connected to the hearing aid(s).

The Assistive Listening Device (ALD) I selected for this patient is Roger Select. This ALD would be connected to the hearing aid by installing the receiver directly into the Phonak Sky Marvel, thus there is no need to attach an external receiver (Phonak, n.d.).

2A. Could this ALD also be used with a cochlear implant?

2

This ALD could also be used with a cochlear implant, but would require an external receiver (Phonak, n.d.).

1. Explain how use of this ALD could improve communication for this pediatric patient.

Roger Select could improve communication for this pediatric patient because speech is covered in 360 degrees, with microphones in six directions. This ALD makes it easier for the patient to hear speech when there is background noise, this would improve understanding of speech in noisy environments (i.e. noisy classroom, cafeteria, playground). If placed in the center of a table, the ALD selects the person who is speaking and is able to switch between speakers. This would be beneficial for a child when working or talking with peers. Roger Select also would allow the child to select the speaker or conversation that he/she wants to focus on. This would be beneficial for the child to block out any background noise or conversation in a classroom setting, allowing the child to focus on the teacher (Phonak, n.d.).

Part Two:

1. Select two of the “features” and explain in your own words the benefit they provide.

The SoundRelax feature provides the benefit of being able to hear sounds comfortably, it softens louder sounds which may be uncomfortable for individuals with hearing aids. The DuoPhone feature is a beneficial feature because it makes it easier to talk on the phone. When the phone is put to one ear, audio is streamed to both ears, making it easier to hear the person on the other end. This is also beneficial as it helps when talking on the phone with noise in the background (Advanced Bionics, n.d.).

2. How would these features be of particular benefit in a bimodal or bilateral condition (compared to a unilateral fitting)?

The SoundRelax feature would be particularly beneficial in a bilateral condition because with two hearing aids, loud sounds would likely be very uncomfortable for the listener. The DuoPhone feature would be beneficial to an individual with bilateral hearing loss as it would help them to focus on the speaker on the phone. Having the speaker’s voice streamed to both ears would help eliminate any background noise (Advanced Bionics, n.d.) These features would also allow for a stereo landscape, which would be particularly beneficial for an individual with bilateral hearing loss (Hidden Hearing, n.d.).
