IOWA MODEL

2

IOWA model is one of the models that can be used for effective implementation of evidencebased practice which has gained popularity over the years since its introduction. Evidence-based practice deals with the use of reliable, and explicit evidence in order to make decisions concerning individual patients care (White, Dudley-Brown, & Terhaar, 2016). Iowa model enhances implementation of evidence-based practice by introducing evidence into practice. Iowa lays its main focus on organization, incorporation of collaboration conduct and also making use of research as some of the types of evidence (Schmidt, & Brown, 2014). The model is helpful in assisting one to focus on knowledge and also problem focused triggers and this leads to questioning of the current practices of the nurses. The model also explains whether the current nursing practices can be improved by using current research findings. In the implementation of evidence-based practice and introduction of change, Iowa model provides seven basic steps which are; selecting a topic, formation of a team, retrieval of evidence, grading of the evidence, developing the practice, implementation of the practice and finally evaluation. There are barriers which can be experienced during the implementation of evidence-based practice through the use of the Iowa model. The steps required for the implementation to take place may require a lot of time and attention. Implementation of evidence-based practice involves a number of aspects which must be put into consideration failure to which the implementation cannot take place (Dang, & Dearholt, 2017). Some of the aspects that are considered during the implementation of evidence-based practice include; policy in a written form, procedures and also guidelines. The interaction between people who provide direct care and the organization is required for implementation of the practice to take place.
